5 Steps To A Healthier Pregnancy image pregnant woman holding husband's hand neededinthehome

Being pregnant is a wonderful experience for many women, but it can also be very stressful and taxing. Not only do you need to stay healthy, but it’s very important to look after the baby growing inside of you. There are a number of health risks during this time, some of which can lead to problems with the pregnancy. To avoid any complications, and to avoid the worst-case scenario of dealing with a miscarriage, there are a few things you can do to protect both yourself and your child and have a healthier pregnancy. Take the following as examples, and see your doctor for further advice.

This is a contributed post and contains affiliate links. My website is my job, and helps to support our family. If you decide to buy something you see mentioned here, I would be so thankful if you clicked through my links so I can receive a small commission at no cost to you. Thank you! Please read my full disclosure.

Step #1: Eat a healthy diet

You are eating for two now, so you shouldn’t miss any meals during the day. You want to eat foods that are of nutritional value, those healthy foods that can both support your body’s needs, as well as those of your growing child. Then there are those foods that need to be avoided. These include raw fish and meats, junk food, and processed meals, those foods that experts say can put the health of your baby at risk. Continue your research online, and speak to a doctor or nutritionist for further advice.

Step #2: Exercise regularly

You don’t want to overexert yourself in exercise, as this can lead to complications with your pregnancy. Contact sports are also best-avoided, for obvious reasons. However, a little bit of gentle exercise, such as swimming and walking, can boost your flagging energy levels, and can strengthen your body in the lead-up to labor.

Step #3: Give up bad habits

Certain bad habits can increase the chances of miscarriage, as well as other health complications to you and your child. Smoking can lead to a premature birth, alcohol increases the risk of FASD, and too much caffeine can affect your baby’s weight. Our advice: give up all of these bad habits, as well as those other habits that can have a negative impact on you, such as  eating junk food and refusing to exercise.

Step #4: Take time to relax

While exercise is important during this time, you also need to rest. You will be tireder than normal, so you are allowed to put your feet up once in a while, getting those around you to cater to your every need. During this period, it is also good to learn a few relaxation techniques. Not only will they help you deal with any stress you feel during your pregnancy, but they will be beneficial when you are struggling with the rigours of labor.

Step #5: Prepare yourself for labor

Whatever way your child enters the world, you want to ensure the birthing process is as safe and comfortable as possible. Whether you opt for a hospital birth, choose to give birth at home, or at a specialist birthing center – Google birthing center near me – you want to find a place where you and your baby are going to have a fighting chance of staying well, with the relevant experts around to support you. You should also go to prenatal classes beforehand, to prepare yourself both physically and mentally for the birth process.

Final word

By adhering to the steps above, you are giving your baby the best possible start in the world. The journey will continue after birth, of course, but that is the basis for another article.
