Mental Health - Did You Know A Cluttered Home Could Damage Your Mental Health? woman holding head with both hands and eyes shut to the mess in her home neededinthehome

Did you know that having a cluttered home could prove detrimental to your mental health and wellness? There’s a common misconception that living in clutter is normal when life is busy – after all, we don’t all have the time to tidy constantly, do we? However, the fact is that while some mess and clutter is normal from time to time, living in a cluttered home can have a long-term impact on your mental health.

Studies have shown that clutter causes mental stress, in addition to making it harder to concentrate. The problem with this is that mental stress can lead to all sorts of mental health problems, including anxiety and depression. That’s not to say that a little bit of clutter is going to instantly impact your mental health, instead it’s something that happens over a period of time.

Bearing that in mind, if your home is a little cluttered, perhaps it could be worthwhile making some changes and creating a less cluttered space. Wondering how you can do that? Below is a list of useful tips to take note of:

Clear out on a regular basis

The first step to creating a more minimalist home is to make clearing out the junk part of your regular home cleaning plan. Once a month, set a day when you will have a clear out. Go through every drawer, cupboard and cubby hole in your home, checking if everything that is there is something you need. Anything that you no longer want or need, get rid of. Don’t hold onto junk, as it will have an impact on your mental health, or it could do, anyhow.

Invest in adequate storage

Usually, the reason that a home is cluttered is due to a lack of storage space. If this is the case for your home, then it’s important to change that. Don’t be afraid to invest in additional storage space – it’s worth the cost if it means that your home becomes a more organised space. No more room for storage space at home? How about searching for storage near me online and seeing what storage facilities pop up? Sometimes, self-storage can be the best option when your home has items in it that you don’t currently need but don’t want to get rid of.

Get organised

It’s also vital that you take the time to get more organised. If your home lacks an organised approach to clutter and mess, then you are going to end up constantly living in mess. However, if you take the time to get organised and put a plan in place for keeping your home in better order, you will feel better for it and will find keeping it clutter-free, much easier.

The fact is that clutter is not good for your health, which is why it’s so important that you take steps to get more organised and ensure that your home is kept in good order. Hopefully, the tips above will help you to do that. Just remember, it takes 28 days to get into a habit, so work hard at being organised and tidy for a month and the habit should stick.
