Essential Tips To Keep Kids Safe From Technology

pinterest-pin-description essential tips to keep kids safe from technology

In many ways, the modern world is significantly less perilous for children than it was in the past. Medical technology in particular means that more kids than ever before survive to adulthood. New threats, however, are emerging over time. And, what’s more, parents don’t always know how to approach them. The internet, for instance, presents a whole raft of new safety challenges that simply didn’t exist in the past. What’s more, these difficulties are often hard for parents to recognize, since they change so frequently over time.

In this post, we take a look at some of the tools and tips that parents can use to keep their kids safe while using technology. Check them out below.

Track The Time They Spend Online

While there are some dangerous people online, the biggest threat to children is often the sheer amount of time they spend browsing the internet. Researchers are continually warning us about the perils of sedentism – sitting in a fixed position all day long – and its link to shorter lives and disease. Thus, one way you can protect your children is to limit the amount of time they can spend using their devices.

Use Mobile Tracking

You can read more on Family Orbit on the topic of mobile tracking. But, in a nutshell, it’s simply a method parents can use to see where their kids are when they’re out of the house. These apps aren’t necessarily for controlling your kids. Instead, they are more for peace of mind and safety. If kids get into trouble, you can see precisely where they are, allowing you to ride to the rescue. It’s also helpful for finding children if you lose them in the mall.

Talk To Your Children About The Dangers Of Technology

Traditionally, parents would educate their children on the dangers of things like crossing the road, bad people, bullies and other dangers. But, in recent years, they’ve had to add a new hazard to the list: technology itself. Tech can be a great tool – and it is driving human progress. But it is also a double-edged sword. It offers higher productivity on the one hand, but also greater dangers on the other.

Parents, therefore, need to have frank discussions with children about the kinds of dangers they face online, especially on social media. They should be aware that people may try to take advantage of them. And they should get coaching on how to post positively. They also need to learn online etiquette so that they understand how to interact favorably with others in online spaces in the future.

Understand How Parental Controls Work

Most tech companies, internet providers and app developers now include parental controls as standard. The purpose of these is to limit access to certain features and functions and give parents an overview of their child’s activity. Many parents, though, don’t actually understand how parental controls work. For instance, Google allows you to set SafeSearch filters. But a lot of parents don’t know how to use these.
