His Mercy Endureth Forever – Psalm 136 book review Kathleen DeJong author
About This Book:
This is a hardcover children's picture book designed for parents to read to small children. I read this to my youngest three children: Miranda (age 7), Mason (age 6), and Mitchell (age 2). This is a large book, measuring in at 8.75″ x 11.25″ when closed. It was shipped in a protected manner in quality packaging and arrived quickly. This book has quality binding and thick pages and should last for years. The copyright date is 2018. The wording is directly from Psalm 136 and it is illustrated by Kathleen DeJong. The scriptures cited are taken from the King James (Authorized) Version.
How We Used It:
Being a large family homeschool parent, I read a lot of books to my children. Typically, they sit around me on our big “L” shaped couch and listen. Sometimes, the little ones will get distracted or bored and play with quiet toys while I am reading. I sat down and read it to them and they looked at the pictures and listened to me read the words. Sometimes, they would point things out or ask about something in the illustration.
The Illustrations:
I really like the art work in this picture book. The colors are vibrant and there are some details like the sheep and birds in the picture below. It is nice that they have a picture on both big open pages. I think that helps to keep the attention of little children when there is more to look at when listening.
The Story:
The wording is directly from Psalm 136 in the Bible. The chosen illustrations help the children to visualize and understand what that part of scripture is talking about. At the end of the reading, there is musical notes that can be played so that this Psalm could be sung and has an illustration of people wearing modern clothing standing and singing in church.
Miranda's Opinion:
“I really liked to look at the pictures and wondered if the boat was going into the big cave or coming out of it.”
Mason's Opinion:
“Yeah, it was good. The pictures are nice.”
Mitchell's Opinion:
He doesn't talk much as he recently turned two, but he did recognize some things in the pictures and would point at them and say what they were. On the page with the sheep, he pointed at them and said “Baaa” to sound like a sheep. So he was definitely into it. There were a few times he would get down and go do something else, then he would come back and look at the pictures again.
My Opinion:
I love to have big hardcover books with large vibrant illustrations for my children to look at. This book really brings Psalm 136 to life in my little one's minds so they can visualize what is being said in this reading. I highly recommend it if you have children from age 2 up to 3rd grade. I am very happy to own it and I think my next little one (due in a few months) will enjoy it for years to come as well!
