When building a home, attics are not one of the places that get much attention. But with time, when the house gets overfilled with stuff, and there is a need for extra storage space, the attic readily comes to mind. Or you may simply need another extra bedroom as your family size grows. No matter your need, converting an attic space is a smart way of expanding your home. Changing an attic to suit your needs is quite simple and can be made as comfortable as any other place in the house. Here are some ways to make the most of your attic space.

Insulation

The location of an attic makes insulation very essential if you decide to convert it into any other space. If not, the attic will be too cold during the winter and too warm during the summer, making it quite challenging to stay in. The goal is to make the new space comfortable all year round. To insulate your attic, you can either opt for batt insulation or loose-fill insulation. The latter is cheaper and, if properly installed, can serve as adequate coverage. Aside from insulation, you should also make sure that you set up a separate heating and cooling system for the attic. Because warm air rises, your current air conditioning system may be strained when used to cool the attic as well as the entire home.

Fix some windows

Attics usually do not have a lot of light due to small windows. But if you will use it as a workspace or extra bedroom, you will need to bring some light. One way to go about this is by fixing some windows or a skylight to bring in more natural light. You can consider adding dormer windows that can bring in more light and offer additional space as they stick out of the roof. With this extra space, you can choose to add built-in features such as shelves or drawers. With traditional windows, be sure to install wide and tall windows to allow the most light to get in.

Add some color

Once you are done converting your attic into the space you want, you need to add some finishing touches, including color. A simple touch of color can instantly brighten and open up your attic space. This makes it more comfortable and inviting when you add some furnishings. When selecting a color, consider the amount of natural light that gets into the attic. If it does not get enough light, you should go for lighter shades. If your attic gets enough light, then you can go for bolder colors.

Check the stairs

When considering maximizing your attic space, do not overlook the stairs. If the stairs take up a lot of room, you should update them to create extra space. To do this, you can divide the staircase into two smaller flights that go in opposite directions and have a shared landing. This type of staircase will take up less space and even provide some room to store items. If the landing is big enough, you can even convert part of it into a bookshelf or a storage unit.

Utilizing your attic space effectively is crucial when it comes to space management within your household. Whatever your reason may be, following these simple tips will help you tremendously to free up space and make it more usable. And if you feel that your home is bursting at its seams with all your belongings, consider searching for local self storage solutions as there are now many affordable storage services in many cities.
