The North American tropical cyclone season runs from June to November, with activity peaking from mid-August through late September. The Atlantic hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends on November 30, though activity tends to peak from mid-August through late September. Because these two seasons run concurrently, preparing your home for the upcoming hurricane season is important.

Take Out Insurance

The best preparation for your home for hurricane season is to make sure you have insurance in place. While you may think you’ll never need it, it’s better to be prepared than to be caught off guard. Get your homeowners and auto insurance in order so that if a natural disaster were to occur, you would be covered. Many companies and plans are available to help you protect your home and family.

Insulate and Seal Your Home

In addition to taking out insurance, insulating your home and sealing it up will help protect it from damage. The best way to do this is by investing in a weatherproof roof. This will keep your roof protected from the elements and make it easier to clean. Another way to protect your home from the elements is to install hurricane shutters on all windows. This will help keep out debris and wind while keeping out rain and other elements.

Install Hurricane Proof Windows and Doors

Consider installing hurricane-proof windows and doors if you live in a coastal area. These impact resistant windows and doors can withstand winds up to 130 mph. You can also consider boarding up your windows and doors. Two things need to happen for your home to be hurricane-proof. The window or door should be able to prevent air from entering your home, and the interior of your home should be protected from the elements.

Trim Your Trees

Trees are an essential part of your local ecosystem. However, during hurricane season, these trees can become dangerous projectiles. To ensure your trees are safe during the hurricane season, trim them back. This will limit the damage they can cause and keep them from becoming dangerous projectiles.

Secure All Loose Belongings or Bring Them Inside

One final thing to remember is that you may want to secure all your loose belongings inside in the event of a storm. This may include taking out furniture and putting it away, bringing pets indoors, and ensuring loose items such as bicycles, umbrellas, and lawn furniture. It can be dangerous for you and your family during storms if you’re not safe inside. At the very least, secure all your loose belongings inside, and make sure loved ones are safe and inside, away from windows, doors, and other potential hazards.

Hurricanes are a natural disaster, and they are a real threat to many areas in the country. Therefore, it’s essential to prepare your home to protect it from the elements. Taking these five steps can help you protect your home from the damage that hurricanes can cause.
