As far as the skills we need to instill in our kids, common sense appears to be one of those things that are fleeting with every generation that comes by. Some people get frustrated at the fact that common sense isn't taught in schools. This means that we have to look at ourselves, as parents, to ensure that we are communicating enough common sense to our children. One of the best scenarios to ensure our kids have some common sense is behind the steering wheel. As our kids learn to drive, and after they've passed their test, they've got a whole world of possibilities out there. This doesn't stop the fact that there are statistically more car accidents in the first 12 months after they've passed their test. So what can we do to ensure that young drivers have the necessary skills when you have kids behind the wheel, even if they've passed their test?

Show Them The Worst Case Scenarios

It could easily be misconstrued as a scare tactic, but the statistics don't lie! Because there is an increase in distracted driving as being the number one cause of car accidents, we need to show our children what could happen if they considered getting out the phone and sending a quick text, even when they're on a quiet road! There are numerous commercials that show the devastating impacts to ensure that this message gets through to our kids. To be sure the message stays with them, we have to take matters into our own hands, when teaching, to an extent.

Consider Sitting With Them From Time To Time

Once our kids have passed their driving test, they will want to be out on the road all of the time. While you are sitting in the car with them from time to time, you are going to make sure that they drive safely, but they may not when you are not watching. After they have passed their test, you can hit them up for a journey to the store, and ask them to pick you up from work on occasion. Of course, they may not be very happy at this, but, at least when you are sitting with them, it's at this point where you can truly observe their driving habits.

Set The Example

In addition to this, you need to think about setting an example. If you don't have any common sense behind the wheel, then why should your children? After all, they will look at how we drive a lot more closely after they passed their test, either to get some hints or to see if we are doing things wrong. This is why, if we are concerned that our children haven't got any common sense behind the wheel, then we’d better get some quickly!

It's easier for us to let our children learn from their mistakes, but when they are behind the wheel, a mistake can prove fatal. This is why we have to ensure that they have some common sense behind the wheel.
