Making home improvements is costly. But it's not just your bank account that could suffer when you're making improvements to your home. If you're not careful, you could end up having an impact on the environment with your choice of improvements. The materials you use and the work you carry out, as well as your results, might not be particularly eco-friendly. Fortunately, there are ways to make your home improvements eco-friendly. If you're not sure how you want to improve your home, there are also some useful ideas that will help you to switch things up with a low environmental impact.

This is a contributed post and contains affiliate links. My website is my job, and helps to support our family. If you decide to buy something you see mentioned here, I would be so thankful if you clicked through my links so I can receive a small commission at no cost to you. Thank you! Please read my full disclosure.

Make These Home Improvements Eco-friendly

New Floors

Installing new floors is a great way to transform your home. However, you should be careful about the materials you use. Sustainability is an important thing to consider before you decide which material to use. For example, hardwood floors are a tricky area to navigate. Even supposedly eco-friendly bamboo floors can use materials that aren't as ethical as you think. But you can install a sustainable floor if you select your materials carefully. Some great eco flooring options include cork, glass tiles, concrete and rubber. Doing a bit of research into which materials to use can help a lot.

Siding

Some eco-friendly home improvements can also help to make your home more energy efficient. Installing siding is a great choice if you want to improve your home's energy efficiency. It helps to keep the heat in and protects your home from the elements. But if you're going to install siding, you should check that it's eco-friendly, like it is at Dennis & Sons Roofing. It's all about using the right materials to make sure it's sourced and manufactured responsibly. If you decide to install siding, ask the installer if they use green materials before you agree to the work.

Painting

Painting your home, whether inside or out, is one of the easiest ways to transform your home. But if you're also worried about the environment, you should be careful about which paints you decide to use. For greener paints, you should look for low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint. These are eco-friendly options that are acrylic, splatter resistant and almost odorless. They're non-toxic and water-based so they can provide a better option for anyone who wants to redecorate but might be worried about what their paint contains. There are a few brands you can explore to get the right paints for you.

Paving

Another thing you could think about if you want to update your home is your paving outdoors. If you're thinking of installing new paving, concrete tends to be pretty eco-friendly. However, you might want to consider how to improve drainage outside of your home. Permeable paving will help to prevent the buildup of water, which is particularly good in areas that are prone to flooding. You can even collect and reuse the water, and the paving will filter it.

If you're going to make home improvements, you might as well make them eco-friendly. Despite what you might think, it could save you money, instead of being more expensive.
