2018 seems to be the year where most of us are making an active effort to create an eco friendly space to live in. Our planet is in more danger than ever, which is why every little thing we can do will make a huge difference to our spending as well as the health of our world. There are many different ways we can make our home better for the environment, and today we are going to talk through a few of those ways.

This is a contributed post and contains affiliate links. My website is my job, and helps to support our family. If you decide to buy something you see mentioned here, I would be so thankful if you clicked through my links so I can receive a small commission at no cost to you. Thank you! Buy better furniture

You may think that a table is a table, but actually there are differences in how these items are made just as there are with the clothes you wear. To buy a piece of furniture which is sustainable, you will want to find pieces which are made locally and therefore don’t need to be transported across the world. This will reduce the carbon footprint of the item and allow you to have a much more eco friendly piece. Another option is to go for secondhand or vintage pieces, because again this will reduce carbon footprint and recycle old pieces.

Ditch the kitchen roll

It is tempting when you spill a bit of juice to simply wipe it up with a paper towel and throw the towel away, but this is wasting paper and creating waste which is not necessary. Instead, swap the paper towels for a dish cloth or unpaper/reusable cotton flannel towels and rinse them after use. It will make a huge difference to the waste in your home and use up much less paper.

Think solar

Install solar panels on the outside of your home to power your house without using too much electricity. You can even make a deal with energy companies and they will pay you for the power you create with your solar panels. You can also use solar light in the garden and at Christmas. Rather than spending money on fairy lights outside the home during December, buy solar powered fairy lights and you will not have to pay a penny in electricity!

Save Light

LED lights are much better for the environment than standard light bulbs, and they can not only lower your bills, but make a massive difference to the environment too. By using these energy saving light bulbs instead, you will be using much less energy and therefore being much more eco friendly at home. And always remember to turn the lights off when you leave a room!

Be a craft master

Honestly, sometimes the easiest way to save yourself some money and energy is to simply create things yourself and reuse items too. If you have an old car tyre which is no longer being used, you can add a bottom made of wood and turn it into a planter in the garden for herbs, fruits or vegetables. Recycling and upcycling items is an amazing way to save money, waste and make the most out of every little thing. There are tonnes of upcycling ideas on Pinterest which will give you something to do on a rainy day.

As of now, we installed a solar panel on our home. And I’m saying that it’s really worth it. I also might try some more here on this list. Anyways, great post!
