Our homes can be one of the biggest purchases we make in our lifetime, and with that comes that sense of ownership and pride when we walk through the door. It is the place where we retire at the end of the day, hope that we can relax and unwind and really feel at home. One of the ways we do that is through our interior decoration, and every one of us has our own tastes. That is what makes all homes unique. But, we can all be a little guilty of following trends, or simply putting things in our home because we believe that's what we should do and not necessarily what we want to do.

Sometimes it can be simply stepping out of your comfort zone, doing something that you want without the feeling the need to check whether friends and family agree with your choices. It can be following trends, but it can also be mixing different styles into one classic room styling. I wanted to share with you some of the ways you can make your interiors unique to you. I hope it offers you some inspiration to change things up in your home this year.

Taking upcycling to the next level
Do you like the idea of upcycling? Making something old and it giving it a new purpose? Upcycling is a great way to give old furniture a new lease of life, and it can also save you a fair bit from having to replace certain items in your home. One of the most popular things to do is to repaint something and maybe add some new little decorative features, but you can take it much further than that. You can make a chest of drawers into a quirky window seat or an old wardrobe into an open accessory display for bags and shoes. You can even make a pallet into a wooden coffee table. Websites like Pinterest can be a great source of inspiration if you have the right know how and creative spark for turning different furniture into works of art.
Adding the metallic trend into the mix
These days there are certain trends out there that can really add some unique touches to your interior decoration, and some can go hand in hand with the whole upcycling journey. A metallic touch to anything like a decorative guitar or helmet, can be a real elegant way to add a unique styling to your home. It’s easy to use a metal like aluminium and have it vacuum metalized onto something and you could click for more info if you’d like to see and read more about the process. Metallic trends can be extended to your furniture, it can be seen in wallpapers these days and even in different stylish accessories like photo frames or vases. The options are endless and you can be as extreme or as subtle as you like with certain home interior trends.
Adding more natural light to your living spaces
Natural light can be a great way to add a new dimension to your home. It’s a great way to bring in a new wave of color without the need for painting or changing the decoration. Natural light from when the sun shines in can make a home look completely different. A great way to do this is to be mindful of how you cover up the windows in your home. While blinds and curtains can create a cozy atmosphere or privacy, you may want to try different fabrics, a lighter color, or even just opening them up during the day.
Declutter to make more of the space you have
Clutter can really make a home feel different than how it feels if you have taken on or a more minimalist approach. While some of the items you may have feel like you love or need them in your home, do they need to be where they are right now? Other items you may no longer need. January is always going to be an ideal time to rid yourself of the clutter for good. You can even sell unwanted things online, which can go towards funding other projects within your home.
Consider different storage options to give your home character
Storage can be a huge problem for some homes, especially if they are smaller or is a more newly built style, which doesn’t tend to have as much storage as you might like. It's a good idea to seek out areas in your home that could be put to good use when it comes to storage. For example, under the stairs can often be a dormant space in your home but a good carpenter could create a cupboard ideal for storing shoes, decorations or things you only need during certain seasons like hats and gloves versus sunglasses and sunscreen.
Add a bit of color without allowing it to take over
Color can be a great way to give any room in your home a new lease of life, but it doesn’t have to take over your whole home. You can use color in the way of a feature wall, which enables you to add a different dimension to your room, without making it feel smaller. A feature wall enables you to add color in other ways to a room such as cushions or other accessory additions. Of course, you’re going to want a perfect finish in the corners if two joining walls are going to be a different color to one another. Find local handyman services to take care of this at a professional level.
Style your home with the things you love
Finally, you can always style your home with the things you love, rather than the things you think you should have in your home. Having a unique interior is purely down to making it your own home and style. Copying a layout as if it was in a catalog may make your home feel nice, but it won’t feel unique to you. Don’t be afraid to showcase your favorite colors, your favorite accessories and pieces of furniture. Combining everything you love will make the interior your own unique creation.
I hope that this has offered you some inspiration for your home interiors this year.
