The main decision you will need to make when looking to decorate your home is what color you will have as the scheme for the room. It is a decision which can be pretty daunting, especially when you go to the hardware store and are confronted with hundreds of shades and hues. However, the decision doesn’t need to be too difficult, and you only need to follow a few simple rules to keep your home looking amazing.

Layering

Most people assume that when they choose a colour for the walls, this is the only colour they can put into the room. This isn’t true at all; and in fact you will add much more depth to the space if you add a few different tones into the space. The key is to start off with a neutral colour and layer the shades from there. For example you could paint the wall a simple grey or white, and then add a feature wall with a statement colour. This could be a dark tone or a bold colour like blue. Once you have this base you can begin to layer the furniture and accessories to match. Adding a grey couch with blue cushions, a splash of yellow with flowers and even some metallic gold in accessories. You can make the most of a room by adding a few complementary colours.

Dark neutrals

Most of the time we stay away from dark tones in our homes because they make a room feel smaller, however if they are done right they can make your space seem much more luxurious and homely. The trick to getting this colour right is choosing a slightly more overcast version of a colour you love. For example a great choice for you if you love blue is a slate toned paint which gives off a slight blue hue to match the space. The same can be applied to a dark plum if you love warm magenta or purple.

Decide how to use your space

If you currently have a very messy and eclectic room to work with, you need to start off by clearing the space and getting help from a company like Val's Cleaning Maids to make it a blank canvas. Once you have this you can decide what the purpose of the room will be. You can’t start to choose a colour for your walls before you know what to do with the space. It will make things much easier for you and allow you to really see what colour will suit the room.

Test first

When you visit the store don’t just pick up the shade you think you want, test a few colors first. You can pick up lots of swatch cards at the store and this will help you to decide which color will fit in the space. Once you have narrowed it down you can pick up sample pots and paint the color into a piece of card and stick it on the wall. This will allow you to imagine what the color will look like on the wall.
