If you are thinking of making an update to your kitchen as spring rolls around, then don’t be put off by price. Kitchens get a reputation for being pretty pricey, but they don’t always have to be. You can still make it look good without having to spend a fortune. But what are the right steps to sorting out your kitchen and making it look as good as new?

This is a contributed post and contains affiliate links. My website is my job, and helps to support our family. If you decide to buy something you see mentioned here, I would be so thankful if you clicked through my links so I can receive a small commission at no cost to you. Thank you! Please read my full disclosure.

You can still have a stylish kitchen remodel without having to spend a fortune. But what are the right steps to sorting out your kitchen and making it look as good as new?[/ctt]

First of all, you do need to have a plan. What does the completed kitchen look like to you? Would it be a certain style or color, or with an old pantry wall knocked down? When you know what you want it to look like, it will be much simpler to execute. From there, you may need to get certain planning permissions (if it does involve knocking down walls, for example), but other than that, you should be good to go and get designing.

You need to know what your budget is, to see if your plans are doable. In many cases, if the kitchen cabinets are not falling off their hinges, they can be easily sanded down and repainted, as well as putting new handles on them. The new flooring, tiles, or cabinets are likely to be the cheaper expense, though. Where the costs come in can be through hiring contractors to do the work for you, if you’re not able to do so yourself. With kitchens, you may be able to install flooring or units yourself, but things like the plumbing, especially if you are moving a sink or installing a new dishwasher, need certain expertise that only a local plumbing service would be able to offer. So getting some quotes for the work that you need help with is a good idea. At least three can give you a good indication of if you are way off the mark, or if all three are quoting a similar price for the same thing.

Choosing a style and color will be the next step, as it can determine everything else about the kitchen. New tiles and units will need to coordinate, as well as other accessories for the kitchen. So decide if you want a country looking kitchen, modern and minimalist, or a classic oak kitchen. Then you can choose your complimentary colors accordingly. All along the kitchen remodel journey, you do need to make sure that you’re making a note of costs. Though a good kitchen can add value to a property, you want to avoid going over the budget where you can.

Lighting is so important in a kitchen, and can often get forgotten about. So make sure that you have a plan for it, before the building work starts. If you want plug sockets in certain places or downlighting onto your countertops, then you need to have a plan in place for it all before the electrician starts work. Things like that can be hard to put in place afterward.

Have you got plans to renovate your kitchen? It would be great to hear what you’ve got planned.
