All those months ago when you first launched your startup, it was hard to envision a time when you’d be considering the hiring of staff. However, now that you’ve grown your business, the orders are coming in thick and fast, and you’ve expanded into different niches, it’s time to acquire the skills needed to cope. You need to hire some employees. Get it right, and you could find your business with a happy, productive and cohesive staff team, where everyone has a common goal, feels invested in the company vision and strives to perform at their optimum. Get it wrong, and you could end up with little more than a group of employees that are unproductive, don’t bring their best and dislike their jobs. As an employer, it’s up to you to create your perfect staff team. Take a look at this advice to ensure your team helps your business go from strength to strength.

Ethos

It’s up to you to foster an atmosphere that is productive, forward thinking and an exciting place to work. You need to move away from your home based business into larger premises. Gone are the days of the singular booths full of desktop computers and a partition separating workers from one another. The new buzz phrase is open plan working. You want to generate a cohesive ethos in an environment much freer from walls and barriers. Employees need to feel empowered to share ideas and have those water cooler moments when problems are solved over a coffee or during a break time.

Add a sprinkling of greenery to the office, set up a chill-out area and maintain a pleasant office atmosphere. Don’t allow the workplace to be a sea of beige with numerous filing cabinets full of individuals working in silence. You want a buoyant, bubbling and innovative place where people enjoy coming to work every day.

Finding The Right Individuals

The old adage that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts has never been more true than for a cohesive staff team. You could locate the finest candidates on paper. They may have a first class honours degree, they may have years of experience with industry rivals, and they might understand the latest methodologies and software. While this is an important facet of any potential employee, you also need to look at how they may fit into your already established team on a more personal level. Do they have a good sense of humour? Can they hold a conversation? Will they take part in social events? These are also vital considerations when building your workforce.

As an employer, you also need to think of the most effective ways to attract the best candidates. You need to seriously consider paying above market rate, setting up a bonus structure to reward strong work and implementing an employee wellbeing program to show your workforce that they are valued. A weekly email to share company news, celebrate successes and namecheck those individuals who have performed exceptionally well can boost morale making the office a more pleasant place to work. Going out of your way to ensure that your employees are happy will ensure that they are as productive as possible.

Get To Know Your Team

You cannot simply expect a team to gel if you don’t provide opportunities for them to do so. This doesn’t mean organizing a raucous night out where your employees can embarrass themselves after one too many drinks. You still need to facilitate a boundary between the personal and the professional. Instead, set up an away day every three months or so. This way, you can build trust through focused team building exercises, reiterate the business vision and create moments that are more relaxed and informal. Away days are a great opportunity to remove yourself from the office, head to a new environment, forget about the stresses of the office for a little while and get to know your team on an individual level. Asking your marketing director how his son got on after his first day at school may seem insignificant, but it shows thought and care. These are traits that are highly valued in an employer.

Creating a staff team is the easy part. Anyone can hire a team of well-qualified people to perform their duties at an adequate level to keep your company from ticking over. The wise employer will hire a cohesive staff team that will perform exceptionally, exceed expectations and enable your business to become a market leader.
