If you have plans to start working from home, you might be worried about all the things you will need to make it work. However, the real secret to working from home is that you only really need 3 things: a brilliant internet connection, a laptop and a quiet space to work in. With these 3 things, you are set to conquer the world and enjoy working from home.

This is a contributed post and contains affiliate links. My website is my job, and helps to support our family. Please read my full disclosure.

The 3 Things You Need to Work From Home

What to Look for With an Internet Connection

When you are working in an office, it is likely that you will have a few different internet connections so that everyone can work at once without overloading the broadband. This is also a good solution when you are working at home, especially if you have other people in the house who may also need to maintain a strong connection.

You should also choose the fastest speeds for your area. For example, www.Optimum.com offers a great service and is much faster than some other internet providers. Though you might be happy with your internet speeds for things like online shopping, working at home is very different. There are lots of careers you can pursue almost exclusively online so your connection needs to be able to keep up.

Which Laptop is Best?

Just as you will need speedy internet, that old laptop you’ve been using for the last couple of years is probably not going to cut it either. As frustrating as it might be, technology has moved so fast that really you should be looking for a new computer just to keep up with the volume of stuff you want to do at once and to give you more flexibility with your work.

The good news is that you can get a heck of a lot more technology into a tiny lightweight laptop now than you could even 2 years ago and it is much cheaper too. The best advice is to go for something you can put in a backpack so you can work in cafes if you want to get out. You may also want to look at the screen quality as looking at it all day will certainly impact your eyes. Go for something that can be dimmed and has a night mode if possible. Or you may want to attach a monitor to your laptop when you are home, so as not to strain your eyes.

Finding a Quiet Space

Lots of family homes don’t really have a quiet space but if you can at least get yourself set up in a permanent spot, you will feel like you are in your work zone, even if you haven’t left the house. The kitchen can be a good place to work, though if you are also in charge of all the housework, it may be too tempting to get up and start cooking instead.

The best solution is to turn a spare bedroom into an office or to install a shed in the yard. The homeworker’s shed is actually a huge trend right now and all you need to do is add a heater and a desk with a comfy chair and you are on your way!
