The Ultimate Guide To Making Your Home A More Joyful Place To Be
Try To Rearrange The Flow of Your Living Room
Rearranging the flow of traffic and where the open areas are can make a huge difference to how open a room is perceived by its inhabitants. You can play around with the layout of your living room and see what really works. It’s all about placing large furniture items, like couches, in angles and in places that make more sense and direct the traffic flow to the right places. Don’t knock it until you've tried it, you might find that after making a few small changes, your home feels more open and happier.
Make Your Bed Every Morning
Getting into the habit of making your bed every morning – and making your kids make theirs – doing this gets everybody into great habits, sets the tone for the day, and keeps bedrooms looking moderately tidy, if nothing else. Not only does it give everybody a sense of accomplishment first thing (it usually takes less than a minute to do), it can encourage a positive spiral of productivity to ensue. At the very least, you’ll feel better when you climb into bed at night after a long day.
Include Artwork In Your Decor
Artwork is a great addition to any household. It can be added to just about any room, and used in large or small amounts to create just the right amount of impact on the viewer. However much artwork you decide to use in your home, make sure you add it as soon as you can. When the brain has been studied closely in the past, it has shown that positive areas light up when looking at artwork. There’s no doubt about it – looking at artwork helps us to feel happier. What are you waiting for?
Remember, you don’t have to spend an absolute fortune to have artwork in your home. You can add something you or your child created, something commissioned from a small and little known artist, or something you just ripped out of a magazine and framed. There really aren't any rules, as long as you love the artwork that you’re displaying, of course!
Add Real Plants
Fake plants are okay. They look pretty and require little maintenance, so they’re an ok option if that’s all you can do. However, real plants will always have benefits over fake plants. For starters, real plants purify the air! They make your home healthier just by being included in the decor. They add beauty, and texture, and help you to bring the outdoors inside. Don’t just add one plant either. Multiple plants look great in just about any decor theme, whether you’re going for something modern and contemporary, bohemian, or traditional. Take a look at Pinterest if you’re not really sure how you’ll include that many plants in your home decor. You’ll be surprised at the plants you can mix and how you can make it work for you.
Get Into A Better Cleaning Schedule
If you’re not currently in a great cleaning schedule, get into one. Create a rota or schedule for your home, and make sure you even give young kids tasks to get stuck into. It’ll get them into good habits while they’re young, and they may not become moaning teenagers this way that don’t want to do anything!
When you get into a better cleaning schedule, you’ll never get to the point where you need to do one huge clean and overhaul, as you’ll be staying on top of everything regularly, with tasks spread out all through the week. Don’t be one of those people that just lets them roll over again and again until your home is seriously messy, or worse, unhealthy.
Use Non Toxic Cleaning Products
As well as getting into a better cleaning schedule, think about using non toxic cleaning products to clean with. Most of the products you’ll find on supermarket shelves today are toxic in some way, and that can easily bring the joy in the home right down. Products you find on sites like CleanHappens.com are non toxic and much healthier to use, especially if you live in a house with pets and kids. These products may even come up as a little more expensive than regular products, but that’s what you have to accept if you want healthier products that do a better job. Think about it – you know it makes sense!
Display Meaningful Items And Souvenirs
Displaying meaningful items and souvenirs from trips you’ve taken, and even pictures that your children have given you, can be a great way to perk up your home. While clutter can bring the vibe of a home down (more on this later) displaying meaningful clutter can actually make home owners happier. Find a few things that really mean something to you and see how you feel when you display them.
Get Rid Of Clutter
Now, it has been proven that too much clutter can make a homeowner unhappy, so make sure you go through your home with a fine toothed comb, picking out the clutter and thinking about what you can do to get rid of it or reduce it. If it seems like too big of a job, then take baby steps. Don’t think about it too much. Just think of one small thing you can do to improve your situation and do it. Do one thing a day if you have to, just start working towards a clutter free home! Here are some pointers for keeping clutter at bay once you’ve sorted the whole situation out:
- Deal with letters as soon as they come in. Do they need to be shredded or do you actually need to keep it? If you need to keep it, have a designated spot. Do your best to deal with letters as soon as you get them.
- Go paperless with as many accounts as you can so your drawers aren't cluttered up with lots of wasted paper!
- Be vigilant before bringing anything new into the home. Ask yourself if this is truly useful. If not, is it truly beautiful? If neither of those things, leave it where it is.
- Clear out and purge regularly. See if you can find one small thing every day that you can get rid of.
Freshen Up Your Decor
Perhaps your decor could do with a little spruce up – you don’t need to spend a fortune to make everything feel fresh. As well as taking the tips already outlined in this guide, how about a fresh coat of paint? You could create a feature wall with a strip of wallpaper that you like, create a more social seating area, frame a picture of your loved ones, or do something else to add something new to your decor. You could even invest in a new ornament to show off – just remember that one large ornament won’t clutter up the space like lots of small ornaments.
Open Some Windows
Sometimes you just need to let in some fresh air to make your home more joyful. If it’s been a while since you let fresh air flow into your home, do something about it. Open the windows and enjoy that clean, fresh air. Oxygen is amazing!
Use An Essential Oil Diffuser
Everyone you know has an essential oil diffuser, am I right? Why? Because they work! Aroma can bring back memories and help stir up feelings. Diffusing essential oils into the air is one way to not only enjoy a pleasant smell, but emerge a calmer, more joyful person. Orange essential oil can bring feelings of inspiration and calming. Peppermint essential oil can invite feelings of peace. You could use a calming, relaxing, peaceful fragrance like patchouli essential oil to get through a stressful time. Give it a try, you might be surprised like I was that it actually works, not just on yourself, but the other people in your home too. It's so easy to use, just plug it in, add water and a few drops of oil, turn it on and go about your day.
Make Memories
Finally, make sure you’re making lots of happy memories in your home. Invite your friends over for coffee dates and have your kid’s friends over for playdates. Host game nights, cook offs, and just enjoy quality family bonding time whenever you can. Laugh, play, and read together. The happier you are in the moment, the happier the memories you’ll make, and the more joyful your home will be!
