The crawlspace is probably the last area of your house you ever think about because it’s out of sight. But when was the last time you had your crawlspace checked?

When doing regular maintenance for your home, crawlspace inspection and maintenance are equally important.  You might wonder why this is essential, but it goes a long way in preventing mold sickness. If you neglect it, several problems could develop, including an increase in dampness and humidity. The buildup of mildew in the atmosphere can lead to several respiratory ailments.

Furthermore, the lack of crawlspace inspection can lead to problems that require costly repairs. If you haven't had an assessment for as long as you can remember, it's time you put one on the calendar. You can inspect it on your own or have an expert do it for you.

Reasons to Inspect Your Crawlspace

Ignoring the crawlspace is similar to disregarding the garage or basement. Several problems can occur here without your knowledge. While getting down there is not an exciting affair, someone has to get the work done.

When inspecting the area, you want to check if there’s any moisture lurking. Leaking water can damage the insulation and the supportive wooden parts of your home.

Pests

Don’t be surprised to find all kinds of pests in the crawlspace. Bugs, termites, and roaches can find their way into this space. They could indicate a dirty home, damp wood, unmaintained area, or all three.

Rodents

Squirrels, mice, raccoons, and rats can also find their way into your crawlspace. They come to seek a warm area to mate and reproduce. Unfortunately, they chew on your electrical wirings, plastic plumbing, and PVS, causing untold damage.

Insulation Issues

If your floor feels warmer in summer and colder in winter, the crawlspace could be damaged. Check also that the crawl bars are not responsible for the problems with your home systems.

How Often Should You Get The Crawlspace Checked?

Crawlspace inspection must be as regular as you clean the attic, gutters, or basement. It's recommendable to have an inspection done twice annually. However, the examination should be more frequent for the sump pumps in this area.

During inspection and maintenance, be on the check out for too much moisture and other water problems. Ensure the service provider you contract provides complete waterproofing for every area. This way, the exterior walls, and other regions will be sealed to keep the water low.

If there are water drainage issues, have a sump pump installed to draw water from under the house. Another solution is to elevate the landscape of the home to get rid of any standing water.

Have a plumber fix all leaking pipes and fix them with proper insulation. All holes and gaps should be waterproofed. Lastly, ensure the area is exterminated to get rid of rodents and repair the pipes and wiring. Crawlspace Depot offers these and more solutions in the inspection and maintenance of your crawlspace.

Final Thoughts

Every part of your house is crucial, and this also goes for the hidden areas like the crawlspace. Not having it regularly checked can lead to costly problems. Instead of waiting until something happens, ensure you're regularly checking the pipes' condition and insulation. You’ll get rid of moisture, drainage problems, rodents, and insulation hitches.
