Home maintenance is a given when you own a home and it’s something to try and stay on top of as much as possible. As fall comes around, you may start to feel the chill in the air and that will ultimately lead to a cooler house that needs heating and more time spent within the home in general for most.

Here are five essential home maintenance tasks to tackle this fall for your home when you get the time.
Inspect and clean gutters
Your gutters are something that’s important to keep clear and free from debris. The reason being is that it can cause a lot of foundation damage if you’re not keeping on top of it. That sort of damage can also be very severe and cost you a lot of money in repairs as a result.
With that being said, for the minor cost that comes with having your gutters checked and cleared out where necessary, it’s going to save you the headache of potentially needing to do further repairs where leaking and flooding of your foundations occurs due to blockages.
At the same time, it’s worth getting the roof checked too, to make sure everything’s functioning properly up there too.
Get your heating system serviced
Your heating system is something that should be regularly serviced to make sure that it’s working correctly and functioning as it should do.
What you don’t want is to find your heating system is no longer working but right in the middle of fall or winter, when you’ll likely need and rely on it, the most.
With that being said, think about what heating system you have, how old it is and get it serviced sooner rather than later. You may want to look at the option to install a furnace if your home requires one to keep it warm.
Clear up and tidy the garden
The garden space might be limited in it’s use over the fall and winter months, so that’s why it’s best to sort it out before those days get shorter when it comes to daylight hours available.
Clearing up and tidying the garden will help to keep pests at bay and will somewhat prep the garden for the cooler months ahead. Trim back shrubs and plants, mow the lawn and clear out any clutter that’s causing a hassle.
Winterize your pipes
With cooler weather, comes more of a risk for your pipes. It’s always good to keep on top of how healthy your pipes are and whether they might need some added insulation.
Winterizing your pipes is definitely something that can save you a lot of hassle, just like checking the gutters and roof of your home.
Get a thermostat with timed settings
Finally, look at your thermostat for the option of setting it to not use up as much energy when no one is at home. You can do this in an inexpensive way without going all the way to a “smart” unit. This is a great way of helping improve your home’s efficiency when it comes to heating and can help to use less energy overall.
These tips will hopefully ensure all of your home maintenance jobs get ticked off the list this year.
