When your elderly parents move back in with you, it’s often a decision driven by the desire to keep them safe and supported in their later years. Whether they need assistance with daily tasks or just extra companionship, sharing a home can provide the necessary care without the stress of them being on their own.

Depending on the level of independence and mobility that your aging parents have, they may want to retain some sense of freedom. So, it may be an option to consider the addition of an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) to accommodate them. Think of it as a small separate accommodation on your property.

Ideally, you want to reach out to a professional builder with a long track record for advice; someone like JDB Builders is an expert ADU builder, for example. You essentially want a team like JDB Builders who can assess your space and needs and help you find what works best for you and your parents. If this option is not suitable for various reasons, such as your parents’ health, you can focus on making adjustments to your home.

Moreover, there are options for getting paid to care for family members, which can help make the arrangement more manageable. If you’re preparing to welcome your parents back, here’s what to consider in terms of setting up your home for their comfort and safety.

The Bathroom: Redesign for Safety and Convenience

The bathroom is a crucial area to update when your elderly parents move in, with a focus on utility and space for everyone. However, remember falls and injuries often happen there, so also consider changes that emphasize safety and accessibility. A walk-in shower is a great addition, as it eliminates the need for stepping over high bathtub edges. Adding grab bars near the shower and toilet will help with stability, and non-slip mats can reduce the risk of slipping.

Also, think about adding a separate toilet to your home. When more people share a household, having an extra bathroom is a lifesaver, especially for older adults who may need to use it more frequently or for longer periods. A utility-focused bathroom that is easy to navigate can significantly improve your parents’ daily comfort.

Create a Ground-Floor Bedroom

If your house has more than one floor, converting a room downstairs into a bedroom for your parents is essential. Stairs can be challenging for seniors, especially if they have mobility issues or balance concerns. A ground-floor bedroom eliminates the need for daily trips up and down the stairs, minimizing the risk of falls and making it easier for them to move about the house.

Choose a room that’s quiet and has access to natural light, as this can make the space feel more welcoming and improve their mood. Adding a comfortable bed, a few familiar decorations, and some seating can create a space that feels like home.

A Hobby Room for Activities and Well-Being

While most households are familiar with the concept of a home office, setting up a dedicated hobby room for your elderly parents can be just as important. This space can be used for various activities, such as painting, knitting, simple DIY projects, or even playing games like puzzles and cards. Having a room where they can retreat to engage in hobbies helps keep them active and engaged, which is beneficial for their mental and emotional well-being.

Staying active mentally can aid in maintaining cognitive function, which may also make your role as a caregiver a little easier. When your parents have opportunities for mental stimulation and enjoyment, they’re more likely to remain positive and independent in their day-to-day life. Plus, a hobby room can also be a social space where family members can join in on activities, making it a place for bonding.

Preparing your home for aging parents involves more than just making physical changes. It’s about creating a supportive environment where they feel comfortable, safe, and valued. By focusing on key areas like the bathroom, providing a ground-floor bedroom, and setting up a hobby room, you can help your parents adjust more smoothly to their new living arrangement. With thoughtful preparations, you’ll create a space that promotes their independence while also offering the care they need as they age gracefully.
