There are all sorts of prescriptions that get recommended to you the moment you utter the dreadful words “I’ve been having trouble sleeping.” But the truth is, there can be very many reasons for it. Perhaps you’re a little stressed out not just because you’re failing to meditate enough or because you’re not rising above every situation that could ever take place, but because you’re dealing with very significant times in your life and as such, they’re expected to affect you.

Or, perhaps it’s not just you, but those cats outside your window that seem to fight every night and require intense encouragement to move away. We’ve all had elements of our sleep schedule affected by issues that might not fix in a neat little box. But outside of the usual health advice (do see your doctor of if the issue become endemic), sometimes a small adjustment could be all you need.

Let’s consider what they may be:

Is Your Pillow Height Enough?

A pillow that isn’t as helpful as it could be for you neck can make you uncomfortable witout you even realising, and you might not notice until you wake up feeling oddly sore or like you’ve slept a little crooked. Sometimes it’s not even pain, just a sense that you weren’t fully comfortable the whole night, or if you turn to look you feel a twinge.

If your head’s too low, your neck might be craning all night. Too high, and it might feel like your chin is tucked in a little too much. None of this screams obvious problem, but over time it adds up and might even affect how well you breathe. It’s worth taking a moment to actually sit or lie on your bed and notice how your head feels when it rests, and find a pillow that works for you, be that memory foam or just a newer options that hasn’t lost as much fill.

Are Your Sheets Irritating You?

Rough or clingy sheets can seem fine until you’re lying there, wide awake, wondering why you can’t get comfortable. Even if they feel fine when you first get in bed, over the course of a few hours, the wrong fabric can really wear on you. That’s why bamboo sheet sets have become so popular for so many people.

A lot of it comes down to how your skin reacts, so if the sheets feel a bit scratchy or stiff, or if they hold too much warmth, that can keep your body from fully relaxing. If you’ve been using the same set for a while, they might just need a refresh, as something softer and more breathable, like linen, could be worth your investment.

How Is Your Breathing?

Breathing at night is usually pretty good for you, but that doesn’t mean yours is optimal. Maybe you snore a touch, and nose strips could open your nostrils a little more to help address it.

You could try propping your head up slightly more than usual or using a bit of saline spray before bed, or even enjoying lavender or valerian root. If the room feels dry, especially in winter, a bowl of water left by the radiator or a small humidifier can help. Sometimes it’s worth checking if allergies are playing a part too, because dust and pollen, can easily trigger some people into feeling uncomfortable at night.

With this advice, we hope you can more easily prevent sleep from seeming like an impossible prospect.
