Tips To Keep On Top Of Home Maintenance

Annoyingly when you own a home (or rent a home for that matter), there are always going to be home maintenance tasks that you need to carry out each year. And these tasks can’t be ignored as if you do ignore them, they can become a lot worse and when they come really bad, it often costs a lot to fix them – whereas it would have been a lot cheaper to solve them before they became big.

One of the best ways to stay on top of home maintenance is by creating a simple schedule for the year ahead. Instead of waiting for problems to appear, try planning regular checks for areas of your home that commonly need attention. For example you may know you are going to need a plumber, so by ringing around and getting in touch with companies like No Xcuses Plumbing, you can ask for a quote to schedule them in.

Below is our guide on tips for keeping on top of your home maintenance.

Plan for the year ahead

One of the best ways to stay on top of home maintenance is by creating a simple schedule for the year ahead. Instead of waiting for problems to appear, try planning regular checks for areas of your home that commonly need attention. For example, you may want to check your guttering during the winter months as moss and debris can fall into it causing it to block. You may also want to factor in checks for your boiler, to ensure your hot water is running correctly. Other checks which you may want to carry out include checking your tiles on the roof and ensuring you don’t have any mould growing in places that get damp.

Don’t ignore small tasks

Whatever happens, don’t ignore small tasks. Small tasks can be hard to deal with sometimes because you put them to the back of your mind. But, the longer you leave them, the worse they can get, which in the long run could turn into an emergency home repair, instead of a small repair when you knew about it many months ago but didn’t do it. Tackling issues early will not only save you money in the long run but also helps keep your home running smoothly and safely – which is very important.

Prepare your finances

Home maintenance often comes with unexpected costs, which is why it’s important to prepare your finances as much as possible. Even if your home is relatively new, things will naturally wear down over time and appliances can suddenly stop working when you least expect it. What’s best is to create a saving pot that you add to every month with a small amount of money. You can then turn to this pot as and when maintenance tasks need carrying out.

What do you do to keep on top of your home maintenance? Which of the above tips do you think you will be doing moving forward? Is there something missing that you think deserves a mention? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
