5 Homemade Cleaning Recipes for laundry dishes and more image washing machine neededinthehome

With a large family several with sensitive skin in the house, we use ingredients and mix up our own cleaners.  Here are some homemade cleaning recipes to make your own laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, toilet cleaner, HE washing machine cleaner, and all purpose or glass cleaner.

5 Homemade Cleaning Recipes To Try Today

Homemade cleaning recipes image homemade dishwasher detergent 1 Tbsp per load in plastic container red lid kitchen

1.  Dishwasher Detergent

1 cup Borax

1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda

1/2 cup Kosher Salt

5 packets unsweetened lemonade mix or 1/8 cup of citric acid

Stir all ingredients well and store.  It may get clumpy and that's okay, you can put the clumps in the dishwasher or break them up.  I use 1 Tbsp per load as I have a water softener.  If you do not, you may need to add 1 Tbsp in the pre-wash section.

2.  Laundry Detergent

1 Fels Naptha Soap Bar grated

2 cups Arm & Hammer Washing Soda

1 cup Borax

hot water

Grate soap bar into small saucepan, cover with hot water.  Cook medium low heat until completely dissolved.  Put washing soda and borax in five gallon bucket (Find one that has a cover and store it up high out of the reach of small children), and stir to mix.  Add dissolved soap mix and more hot water.  Stir until powder is dissolved.  Fill bucket with hot tap water.  Stir, cover securely.  Let it sit overnight.  Next morning, stir.  Mix equal amounts of soap concentrate and water in an old empty laundry soap container or whatever you want to store your smaller amount in for use.  There will be clumps of “goo like” material and this is normal and it is okay to go in your washing machine.  Shake the container well before each use.  Non-HE machines need 1 cup.  HE machines 1/3 cup or more for large load.  This is a non-sudsy formula so it is safe for both types of washing machines and is great for country septic tanks as well.

3.  Toilet Cleaner/Deoderizer

Sprinkle inside of pre-flushed toilet with 1/4 cup baking soda.  That's really all you need, then scour with toilet brush and flush.  We sometimes add vinegar and watch it bubble up, then scour it well.

4.  HE Washing Machine Cleaner

My washing machine says, “clean washer with Affresh.”  I don't want those chemicals on our bodies in any way.  I called the manufacturer of the washing machine and found out a person can instead use 2 cups of distilled white vinegar.  I have been doing this for many years and it is working great!

5.  All Purpose Cleaner or Glass and Mirror Cleaner

I use this for glass, mirrors, toilets, bath/shower, counters, sinks, fixtures, walls, computer and TV screens, and more.

1 cup distilled white vinegar

1 cup warm water

(1 or 2 drops food coloring is optional, just so people know it is a cleaner.)

  • Borax
  • Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
  • Kosher Salt
  • unsweetened lemonade mix
  • citric acid
  • Fels Naptha Soap Bar
  • baking soda
  • distilled white vinegar
