Changing your career is something that can transform your finances if you get it right. But what can you do to gain instant traction and make a success of it? What works?

That’s where this post can help. It looks at some of the methods you can use to flip to a different career and get to a flying start.

Here’s what you need to know:

Assess Your Skills And Passions

First, you’ll want to assess your skills and passions. Think about what it is that you can do and how that might help you in the future.

For example, if you like going on long-distance journeys by road, a career in hazmat trucking might be a good option. This industry is exploding because of the need for gasoline, medical gases, and industrial chemicals in growing onshore industries, like energy and healthcare. With this career, you’re niching down into something that’s not only in a high-demand industry like logistics, but also high demand within that industry.

Alternatively, if your passion is in project management and data analysis, you can explore whether it might carry over to a new field. Using human resources tools that tell you what your key skills are and what you should do is critical.

Research High-Demand Industries

Next, you want to look at and explore high-demand industries, like tech, healthcare, and energy. Again, these sectors are more likely to be expanding job opportunities and looking for people with the requisite skills to get started.

LinkedIn and Glassdoor often tell you which roles are in highest demand, and what you should do. Checking things like job boards for roles can be helpful, as well as looking for opportunities as consultants. You may find that you can take what you already know and apply it to something new in a different industry, perhaps for higher pay.

Network Like A Pro

You also want to start networking when you change your career. Usually, you get jobs based on what people think of you, not what you can actually do.

This networking could involve sending personalized messages to people, asking to connect or you could go to events. Ideally, you want to connect with them in a way that feels natural but also introduces them to your skillset.

The volume of networking you need to do is usually higher than you think. The more contact you can have with other people, the more likely you are to see breakthrough success.

Tailor Your Resumé

Another approach is to tailor your resumé and cover letter. You want something that stands out when people read it and encourages them to want to explore what you do more.

Adjusting your resumé might seem like a small tweak, but it can have an outsized impact.

Apply Follow-Up

Finally, you want to think about follow-up after you apply for jobs. No, it isn’t for the faint-hearted, but sending an email sometimes shows enthusiasm and is an opportunity to remind whoever is hiring you about your skills. Usually, this approach works best for small businesses, not large ones.
