A home is a place that you want to keep in good condition, especially when it comes to your safety, security and happiness within the property. Plumbing can often be a problem area and something that you want to address sooner rather than later.

Whether it’s a blocked toilet or a piping issue that’s preventing heating coming into parts of your home, spotting the problem and getting it resolved quickly is key.

To spot any potential plumbing problems, there are a few signs and sounds that will indicate that there’s an issue at play. Here’s everything you should be looking for when it comes to spotting a problem with your home’s plumbing.

Look for drainage issues

Drainage issues are often a common problem when it comes to your home’s plumbing. The reason being is that anything going down your drain beyond just water is going to be a potential blockage issue.

From food to thicker liquids, you want to identify any drainage issues and get these resolved as quickly as possible. Drainage issues are often very obvious and you’ll find that water takes longer to go down the drain or simply stops draining quickly. With drainage issues, you might encounter bubbling as the water drains down the pipe and particular smells too.

Assess water pressure and flow

Water pressure and flow is something that can be annoying to experience when you no longer have fast flowing water. Both cold and hot water pressures are good to address and fix where required.

The only way you’ll spot the water pressure and flow is if you’re checking the water regularly. If it’s coming out fast and constant on some taps and not on others, then it might be something you need to get checked, particularly when it comes to your heating systems.

Assessing these areas of your plumbing isn’t always something that’s done because many households might just deal with the low pressure instead of addressing it.

Do a water meter test

A water meter test is a good way of figuring out if there’s any issues with your home’s plumbing. Most people will have a water meter available to check and so it’s good to get a look at this to see if there are any signs of leakage.

Even if there aren’t any visible signs, it can be helpful to make use of a water meter to check everything is in working order.

Look out for obvious signs like leaks and noises

Can you hearing pipes banging or gurgling sounds coming from your drains. When there’s a problem with your home’s plumbing, it’s likely to come with an assortment of sounds that will indicate something is not quite right.

Leaks are of course, an obvious sign that something has occurred and needs to be fixed immediately. Any leak whether minor or major is something you want to take action on quickly and effectively.

Be sure to look out for these visible and audible signs so that you can take action quickly.

Has your water bill spiked recently?

A spike in your water bill can often be an indication that something’s not right. In theory, your water bill should remain the same or similar, especially if you’ve not really used much in the way of water.

If your water bill has spiked recently, then it’s something that you should be considering as a sign that you need to get your plumbing and drainage systems checked out. Not only that but you might have appliances that are using too much.

Get help from a professional

When there’s a problem with your home’s plumbing, it’s a good idea to get help from a professional. This is important because otherwise, if you attempt to fix the issue yourself, you might end up doing more damage than it’s worse.

With that being said, look at getting help from a professional plumber. This is the best way that you can address any problems that have cropped up or to even just take a look at the condition of your plumbing as it stands.

The more often you stay on top of your home’s plumbing, the better. Preventative care with your home maintenance and in particular for your plumbing, is the best way to keep on top of things.

Hopefully, with these tips you’ll have the knowledge and know-how you need to spot a problem with your home’s plumbing and get it sorted so that your home can return to a harmonious state.
