The bathroom is one of the most important living spaces in our homes, yet it often takes a backseat when it comes to interior makeovers. Many of us prioritize our kitchens and living rooms. If you dream of a tranquil haven or a beautiful space to retreat to after a busy day, you don’t have to spend a fortune to create a stunning space. Here are some simple steps to spruce up a tired, dated or uninspiring bathroom.

Tackle repairs and unfinished DIY jobs

Many of us are guilty of making lists of jobs to do around the house and then putting off DIY tasks. If you’ve got broken tiles, signs of water damage, shelves that need hanging or old bathroom units you’ve been meaning to replace, start by tackling these issues. Create a new list of everything you want to fix, replace or revamp and decide what you can do and what needs professional attention. If you’re short on time, or you don’t have the relevant skills, expertise or equipment, look for local experts in tile repair and replacement, plumbing and bathroom installation. It’s worth exploring options such as upcycling furniture and buying second-hand cabinets, tubs and shelves if you’re looking to transform your bathroom on a budget.

Freshen up the walls

Adding a coat of paint or fresh wallpaper is an excellent way to add instant impact without breaking the bank. Whether you love chic, minimalist trends or all-out vintage glamor, you can use paint and paper to design a space that looks incredible and creates the vibe you’re looking for. Opt for light shades and neutral tones for a compact, cosmopolitan, contemporary bathroom, or channel Art Deco styling with printed wallpaper. You can paint or paper every wall or create a statement wall. This is a great option if you have a bijou bathroom and you don’t want to make it look darker or smaller. Test different shades in natural light before you choose paint colors and think about the impact of colors on your mood. If you want your bathroom to be a serene sanctuary, for example, choose pastels, neutrals or soothing shades of blue or green.

Add accessories

Accessories can make all the difference when revamping a bathroom on a limited budget. Using details can help you embrace new trends, modernize the space and create a more cohesive, functional and aesthetically pleasing design. Choose accessories that suit the style of the room and complement the colorway. Examples include colored towels and rugs, storage jars, vases and plant pots, mirrors and wall art.

Upgrade your lighting

Fitting new lights and lamps can breathe life into a drab, dark space. Choose fittings that match the trend of the room and use lighting to set the right tone. For a cozy, intimate, calming space, choose soft lighting. There’s a dazzling array of designs available for bathrooms today. Take your time to visit stores, browse websites, magazines and social media feeds and compare prices before you buy. Examples range from ornate chandeliers and statement-making pendant lights to simple spotlights and retro-themed wall lamps.

For many of us, the bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house. If you dream of having a stunning space, but your bathroom is cramped, tired or dated, you don’t have to blow the budget to transform the room into a beautiful, functional bathroom. Simple steps like tackling repairs, freshening up the walls, adding accessories and updating your lighting can have an amazing impact.
