Taking the family on vacation can bring a tear to even the most laid back parent’s eye. Whether you’ve got a large family or you’re taking your only child two year old abroad for the first time, traveling with children can make you never want to leave the house again!

Kids have shorter attention spans, they need more snacks and bathroom breaks, and they can put all that energy onto you. By the time you’ve arrived at your destination you’re all cranky, and that isn’t a good start to what’s supposed to be a happy vacation experience!

That’s why tips like these are essential to family travel planning. If you want the trip to be comfortable for everyone, here are three things to do.

Have Rest Days

Going away for more than a couple of days? Make sure you fit a rest day or two into the itinerary. Rest days give you the time you need to put your feet up and get some proper sleep in.

Walking around for hours on end can make your soles very sore, and if just sitting down at a restaurant makes you feel ready for bed, you definitely need time for a nap in the near future!

Both kids and adults alike benefit from rest days, and if the kids get a bit cranky from being cooped up, head outside the hotel for a few minutes but don’t go too far.

Book Spacious Accommodation

Spacious accommodation makes sure you all have a bit of room to yourselves. Even parents need a little break from their kids from time to time, and vice versa! If you’re all feeling cranky and there’s an argument brewing, head back to where you’re staying and have some quiet alone time to cool off.

No matter where you’re heading, there’s going to be a spacious option that’ll suit your family. Visiting the dense district of Washington DC? Skip booking a hotel and look into long term rentals washington dc instead. If you’ve got more than one room to spend time in, you’re going to have a bit of privacy when you really need it.

On the other hand, if you want to get into the great outdoors, book a cabin to spend the week in. This way you’ll be surrounded by both the fields and forest, and a bit of safety after you shut the door.

Don’t Sweat Over the Routine

One final little tip for you! Routines go out of the window when on vacation. If the kids are staying up later than usual or aren’t eating as many vegetables as you’d like, don’t sweat it. You’re on vacation and it’s OK to be a little lax over what happens and when!

Don’t tie yourself up in knots; get through the days as they come, make some happy memories, and then get back to the routine once you’re home again.

Taking the kids on vacation? You can make it a comfortable trip for everyone.
