Having an extension built onto your home can feel like it takes years to complete. But, when it’s finally done, you can look forward to lovingly decorating the new rooms of your home. Now you can begin thinking about how you want to decorate each new room and what purpose those rooms will serve.
Many people make the mistake of diving straight into decorating without thinking about their options. So, if you’re about to embark on this exciting journey, keep these things in mind so that you don’t end up regretting your choices later.

Budget
The first thing you should take a look at is how much you ideally have to spend on decorating each room. And if you're considering sustainable furniture, remember to factor in those expenses. Alternatively, you can consider Sustainable Living Consultations to get guidance in this regard. This way, you get tips on styling concepts and ideas that suit your budget..
Since your home is now larger than before, you’ll probably need new furniture to fill the rooms with too, so make sure you take the cost of that into consideration. Then you’ll need to think about other furnishings like curtains, blinds and rugs that you may want in that room. While it may not seem like much on the surface, putting a budget into place for your furniture, furnishings and your colour scheme is a wise idea. The last thing you want is to overspend and end up in debt!
Lighting
Another thing you should think about is what kind of lighting that particular room will need. For example, if you’re decorating a new bathroom, you might want to think about having a light with a built-in extractor fan to expel any steam left in the room from showers and baths. If the room doesn’t already have any light fittings, you’ll need to call in an electrician or an electrical wiring repair service to get the work done before you decide to decorate anything. Calling one out at this stage will also allow you to cover up any parts of the wall or ceiling they may have removed to wire everything up.
Now is the time to think about other aspects when it comes to your lighting too. Do you want it on a dimmer switch so that you can lower the light? Do you need a lower lightswitch for a member of the family in a wheelchair? Take all of these considerations into mind before even thinking about paint or wallpaper.
Furniture
Next you’ll need to think about the furniture that’s going to go in that particular room, and also create a budget for buying pieces you don’t already own. Instead of buying all new furniture, why not upcycle and reuse pieces you already have to save some money? Fed up of your dingy old wardrobe? Give it a lick of paint and some new door handles. In need of a new bed base? Why not build your own using materials from other pieces of furniture? Even if you end up buying the materials for a new bed frame, you could still be saving yourself money!
Layout
Before beginning any kind of decorating (and perhaps while your electrician is still about) you should think about the layout of the room so that you can plan where the most ideal place for electrical outlets are. For example, if you’re planning on building a computer desk, it would make sense to have outlets nearby so that you don’t have trailing wires across the room. Again, it’s best to do this before painting or putting up wallpaper in case any of your walls need to have holes made in them to lead wiring for your outlets.
Aside from avoiding an electrical nightmare in your newly built rooms, it also gives you a chance to step back and envision the room properly. Once you know where certain pieces of furniture are going to go, you can begin planning your decorating accordingly. That might mean moving your feature wall to a different wall or realizing that the shade you picked out will make the room feel smaller.

Flooring
It’s important to take into consideration what kind of flooring you’re going to have too, and not just in terms of making sure it fits with your decor either. For example, if you’re decorating an upstairs room, you’ll need to think about the noise that could come from that room if you were to choose hardwood flooring. The room below it would hear that noise every time someone walks around. If you’re sticking to hardwood flooring, make sure you get some thick underlay to minimise the amount of sound that comes from that room.
Storage
If the room you’re decorating is on the smaller side, then you’ll need to be clever when it comes to making sure the room is neat and tidy. The most simple solution is making sure that you have an effective storage unit to keep all of your belongings in. However, if you don’t want to buy furniture, or you can find one that will fit the space well, then why not consider building your own storage space? You can design and build it to fit the size and shape of the room perfectly, and you can even make sure that you make the most of space above head height too.
Function
While there’s a good chance you already know what purpose each room is going to serve, could it be used as a multifunctional room? For example, if you’re decorating a guest bedroom, could you also use it to set up your gaming PC and all of your consoles for gaming night? Envision the many ways that you could use that room and make sure that you’ve got everything in place ready. Whether that be a storage cupboard for your ironing board or some comfortable seating, your room can be multifunctional from the get go.
