Your home's exterior matters a great deal, yet most people don’t give it the priority it deserves. It’s usually all about the inside, and this makes sense, but it’s easy for the outside of the property to become neglected.
The reality is, though, that the exterior is the first thing people notice, and if you’re trying to create an aesthetically appealing home, first impressions are everything.
This is an even more important area if you’re looking to sell. People make snap judgments on whether or not they like a home simply based on the outside, and some don’t even bother looking at pictures of the inside, as they’ve already written the property off.
The outside of your house is also critical from a structural perspective, and so even if you’re not bothered about it for the above reasons, you still need to pay attention.
In this short article, you'll learn about five of the most important areas to focus on for making your home look as great on the outside as it does on the inside.

The Roof
If you’re dealing with an exterior that needs some TLC, it’s best to start from the top. No one needs telling that the roof is one of the most important parts of the home, but given that it’s mostly out of sight, it’s easy to forget about it.
Having a roof inspection every six months is a great way to ensure everything’s in working order, and you should also have the gutters looked at: it’s very common for them to get clogged, especially if you have overhanging trees. Issues with the gutters can cause water damage, which degrades the plaster and brickwork.
Siding
Improving your existing siding, or having new siding installed, is a surefire way to improve the look and structural integrity of your property.
This element not only helps make your home look great from a distance, but it also plays a key role in energy efficiency and protecting the property from weather damage.
Cracks may need to be repaired, and the materials might need to be resealed if they’ve started to come away from the wall. If your siding has deteriorated badly over the years, it’s usually more cost-effective to simply have it all replaced.
Landscaping
The green areas outside your home offer a great opportunity to add a pop of color to the place, and when your front garden, lawn, and drive are full of dead plants and debris, the drab appearance that results brings the appeal of the entire house down.
The best place to start is with the grass. Make sure you have properly edged borders and that the blades are kept nice and short for a clean look. It can also be a good idea to add some hanging baskets with bright, colorful flowers (and where flowers and plants are concerned, go with perennials, as these look great year-round and are low maintenance).

Paintwork and Varnishing
Repainting your house or adding some external varnish to the wooden parts is a fantastic way to bring the place alive again. The walls of your property cover the biggest surface area, so it stands to reason that there’s the most potential for creating an impactful appearance there.
It may take you a while to determine the right color palette, as there are many different options you could go for. Usually, pastel tones work best for a classy finish, and subtle greys or bright whites and creams always look great. Be sure to seal your paint in with a high-quality sealant once you’re finished.
Doors and Windows
And finally, there are the doors and windows. Your front door may only be a small portion of the overall surface area, but it’s where people’s eyes are naturally drawn to, and you can capitalize on this. Make sure it stands out and contrasts tastefully with the rest of the colors of the exterior, and you should also take the hardware off and give it a good polish.
Where the windows are concerned, it’s all about keeping the glass clean and making sure the frames are free of flaking paint and rotting wood. If you haven’t had your windows replaced in the last ten years or so, now may be a good time to do so.
Wrapping Up
This article hasn’t covered absolutely everything to do with redefining your home’s exterior, but work on the elements above, and you’ll be well on your way to a fantastic-looking property.
