How to Choose the Right Kitchen Cabinet for a Functional Family Home

Choosing the right kitchen cabinets, especially for a family household, requires balancing high durability and smart storage solutions to handle daily traffic and clutter.

There are some considerations to make when it comes to choosing the right materials and incorporating deep drawer units to prioritize the right safety elements in the space, too.

Whether it’s the durability of materials or functional storage solutions, picking the right type of kitchen cabinet is key.

Durable materials for high-traffic homes

Families will need materials that can withstand a lot that goes on in and around the home. From heat, to stains and just daily use in general.

With that being said, there are some materials worth considering:

Melamine Faced Chipboard

Melamine Faced Chipboard or MFC is an excellent choice for modern and busy kitchens. It’s stable, cost-effective and eco-friendly. It’s also highly resistant to stains, scratches and moisture too.

Medium-Density Fibreboard

This is an ideal option for painted finishes. MDF offers both durability and smooth surfaces that can easily be touched up if scratched.

Plywood

A strong, stable, durable option that handles heavy loads extremely well. It makes for a good cupboard when needing to hold heavier pots.

Avoid any solid wood as this requires a lot of maintenance and can easily warp or stain under high temperatures and moisture fluctuations.

Functional storage solutions

A well-organized kitchen is one that helps to reduce stress. With that being said, it’s good to focus on maximizing the accessibility for all your family members.

The use of deep drawer units helps for easier access to heavy pots, pans and tableware. These help you see everything at once. The same goes for pull-out pantry units, which are excellent for storing snacks and dry goods like cereals.

Corner solutions can incorporate Lazy Susans to turn inaccessible corner spaces into usable storage.

Family-friendly design features

There are lots of different family-friendly design features to consider when designing a new kitchen space and cabinets. Soft-close hinges are a must for families to help prevent slammed doors, broken cabinets, and pinched fingers.

Make the design of your kitchen cabinets child-safe by placing lightweight items in lower and accessible cabinets, reserving the higher cabinets for cleaning supplies and sharp utensils. You should also use lower-level drawers or open shelves to allow children to independently access snacks or dishes.

Matte or satin finishes to cabinets are easy to clean and are better for hiding smudges and fingerprints.

Cabinet styles and aesthetics

A popular and timeless choice when it comes to both traditional and modern family homes is shaker cabinets. They’re robust and easy enough to keep clean. Two-tone cabinets are great too, where you have dark and durable base cabinets contrasting with the upper, lighter cabinets.

This helps hide dirt on the darker ones and keeps the space looking airy with the upper, lighting color.

A functional space is an absolute necessity when it comes to raising a family, so use these tips to make sure you choose the right kitchen cabinet for your needs.
