Unusual Things You Can Sell To Fund Your Next Family Vacation

Going on vacation with a large family gets expensive quickly. That is why sometimes it can help to top up your vacation budget by selling some of the unusual things below. The good news is that we get pretty specific on the items that can make you money. Just keep reading to find out what they are, and which options suit your family best.

Some links in this post are affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase.

Digital items

There are all sorts of digital items that you may own that can be worth a significant amount of money. The first of these is an old internet domain. Indeed, some people make a business of buying these up and reselling them. This means if you have one they are looking for, they might pay you big bucks!

Another option is gift cards you have left unused. Often, when someone buys a gift card, we forget about it, or it's for a store that we don’t actually like that much. It's ok though because you can resell these and claim back a good proportion of the value in cash. All of which can go towards your vacation fund.

If you are a gamer and have clocked significant hours in a game, you may be able to sell your account for money. Yep, that’s right, you can earn money by levelling up a gaming account and then selling it! People are willing to pay well for these accounts. This is because it means they get all the advantages of playing at a high level without having to do all the grind-work to get there. Games with particularly popular account sales include World of Warcraft and Diablo online.

Zero-waste items

You can also make some extra money to go towards your vacation by selling zero-waste household items online. The great thing about these types of items is that they can make you money, while also being better for the environment. One great option is to make unpaper towels and sell them or make them for yourself and save the money you would have spent on paper towels. Another is to sell old clothing. Indeed, there is a massive market for pre-loved clothing online, and you can make decent money in it too. You can even upcycle several unwearable pieces into a new garment and sell that.

Did you know you can make money out of your old food scraps? Well, that is precisely what people who sell compost do. Gardeners need good-quality compost to provide nutrients to their soil. The good news is that you can make great-quality compost at home by starting your own heap and using food scraps to fuel it.

Real estate and land

Other unusual items that could be profitable to sell include old properties that you no longer want. In fact, because these tend to be big-ticket items, you could end up paying for an entire vacation with a single sale. If you have a home or some land for sale, then working with a real estate agent can be a good option. Alternatively, you may want to opt for a home or land cash buying service. The main benefit of these services is that they will offer you a price based on your home or land as is, and in a very short space of time. Something that means you can get access to the funds you need quickly and with the minimum of hassle.

Skills and knowledge

You can also sell your skills and knowledge online for money. There are plenty of easy ways to do this. One is to write a how-to guide and then put it up for sale on your website. You could also create a video tutorial for this and put it behind a paywall.

Another option is to offer tutoring services. This is a role that pays you by the hour, and you can offer a range of subjects. These include singing, musical instruments, English, and other languages. You can also offer tutoring in specific academic subjects like Math or Science. There are plenty of tutoring platforms you can register on, which can help you build up the number of lessons you do each week.

Old items you no longer need

Last of all, you probably have some old items that you no longer need to sell. We're not just talking about any old bric-a-brac here, though. Instead, look for things that are popular with collectors like old Lego sets that have all the pieces, or vintage toys from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Special editions of things like books and computer games often command a higher price as well, giving you more money to enjoy on vacation.
