The colors that you select for your walls and ceilings are going to play a big role in how bright or dark your space feels. Light hues such as white, cream, and soft gray, will reflect natural as well as artificial light, making rooms feel a lot more open and airy.

However, paint is not the only thing you need to consider. Here is a look at some ways in which you can bring in more light into your home.

Maximize Natural Light Sources

Keep your windows clear of obstructions to let the most daylight in. Clean up your outdoors by trimming outdoor trees or shrubs.

These may be blocking sunlight. You should also consider removing any heavy drapes or very dark blinds. Always opt for sheer curtains that allow sunlight to filter through and light up the room. This will create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Use Mirrors to Reflect Light

Strategically placed mirrors can amplify the light in just about any room by reflecting it around the space. You can hang a large mirror opposite any window to bounce light deeper into the room.

You can also use mirrored furniture and decor to achieve this same effect. This not only increases brightness, but it will also create the illusion that there is more space.

Add Layers of Lighting

You should never rely on just one overhead light. Incorporate a mixture of ambient, task, as well as accent lighting to evenly distribute brightness all throughout your rooms.

Table lamps, floor lamps, and even under-cabinet lighting, as well as sconces can help eliminate dark corners and add a lot of warmth.

Highlight Windows with Style

If you want to brighten up your space without having to sacrifice privacy or design, then custom window treatments are a good solution. You should choose light-filtering fabrics that will provide coverage while still allowing for daylight to flood into any room.

Roman shades, woven woods, or even linen drapes will complement your room’s decor. It will help you to make the most of natural light.

Decorate with Light-Enhancing Materials

Incorporate a lot of reflective and light-colored materials into your design scheme. Think in terms of glass tables, metallic finishes, and glossy tiles.

You should even consider light wood furniture. These surfaces will help to distribute light naturally. It will make your home feel more luminous.

Even using a strategically placed metallic vase or bright area rug will contribute to a brighter feel.

Keep Clutter to a Minimum

Too much furniture or decor will make a room feel very cramped and dark if you are not careful. Keep your layout clean and open in order to allow light to move freely through the room. Opt for streamlined furnishings as well as purposeful decor choices. This will make the space feel lighter and much more organized.

If you're ready to take on the challenge of bringing more light into your rooms so you can make your home cozy and comfortable, then all you have to do is start by selecting any of the tips given above. You don't have to do everything at once, but bit by bit you will begin to see a difference.
