When the talk shifts to bathroom upgrades, everyone has an opinion. Most of the time, those opinions revolve around quite common ways to improve this part of your home. Get a walk-in shower, install underfloor heating, and so on. But what about those bathroom upgrades that slip under the radar and go underappreciated? Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference – and here are some amazing bathroom upgrades you didn’t know you needed until now.

A Bidet Toilet
Yes, a bidet toilet is genuinely an amazing bathroom upgrade that will make you pause and wonder why you’ve not had one before. You can either get an entire toilet with a bidet – or there are bidet attachments you can add to most toilets. Either way, it’s like you’re in a fancy hotel every time you go to the bathroom. Seriously, you feel so much cleaner and fresher each time; it’s one of those rare home upgrades that affects so many other parts of your life away from the room itself.
Backlit Anti-Fog Mirror
You can now buy anti-fog mirrors that work with varying degrees of success. If you’re someone who always ends up fogging the mirror after showering – no matter how wide you leave the window open – then this is a must. It’s worth splashing the cash to get one that actually works, but the idea is that your mirror won’t fog over anymore. You can have a steamy shower, hop out, and use the mirror right away. It’s a magnificent bathroom upgrade for people who often have to wait ten minutes or wipe down the mirror to see their reflection.
To add to this, get a mirror with back lighting. You can do this yourself using LED strip lights – or find a mirror that has a built-in backlight. The benefit of this upgrade is that it provides amazing front-on lighting when you’re looking in the mirror. It’s easier to see what you’re doing, and you feel like a celebrity getting ready in hair and makeup before going on a talk show.
Showerhead Filter
A showerhead filter is one of those products you haven’t heard about, but then you read up on them and wonder why they’re not just automatically built into every shower system ever. Effectively, it’s an extra filtration device that attaches to your shower head and stops minerals from getting through. If you live in a hard water area, this is legitimately one of the best bathroom upgrades you can make.
Washing your hair with hard water can mean you damage it – and your skin – which may be why your hair always seems frizzy, or you’ve constantly got a dry scalp or eczema on your face. Installing a good showerhead filter can change this for you. It basically means you wash with pure water that’s good for your hair and body. You could see improvements in your hair quality within weeks, as well as a reduction in many of your common skincare worries.
Recessed Shelving In The Shower
It’s time for honesty hour: how much stuff do you have cluttered around your shower? If it’s a walk-in shower, you’ve probably got bottles of shampoo and other stuff all on the floor – or resting atop the main part of the shower. Those of you with bath/shower combos will decorate the tubs with all of your shower essentials. It makes the entire bathroom seem so messy, and this bathroom upgrade will change that forever.
Build recessed shelving into the shower so you’ve got storage space in a good location. You pretty much carve out a chunk of the wall and then smooth it all out and add a shelf or two. Design it so it’s around head height – which makes it easy for you to access what you need – and then all of your essentials can sit on the shelving. It declutters the shower/bath and makes the rest of the bathroom look so much nicer.
Night-Time Lighting
You get up in the night to go to the bathroom, and you’re immediately blinded by the bright light. Or, even more annoyingly, your partner goes to the bathroom, leaves the bedroom door open, and you wake up because of the light that shines in.
Solve this problem by installing nighttime lighting. These are dimmer LED lights that can fit in the ceiling and turn on either via a separate switch or through motion sensors. You can get as technical as you want with this, but it means nobody will ever be blinded by bright bathroom lights at 1am again.
It’s fair to say that you absolutely did not know you needed these bathroom upgrades before reading this post. However, after reading about them, you now want to add them all to your bathroom immediately! They’re all really good at giving you something beneficial – and they’re not exactly expensive or time-consuming upgrades either.
