Focus on Rustic Interiors
One of the first things you need to do is focus on having a rustic interior. If you are starting with the obvious then you need to take note of the fact that all good overhauls start with inspiration. There is no such thing as an original idea any more, so it helps to get as many images as possible so you can build a mood board around what you want to achieve. Granted, not all of it will be possible if you have budget or time constraints, but it’s a start. When you have your collection, you can then begin to identify what you like about everything. Is it the color? The lighting? The furnishings? If you can do this then you will soon find that it is easier to get the look you are going for.
Scour Yard Sales
Believe it or not, reclaimed yard sales are the best way for you to achieve the rustic look you are going for. Old pieces of wood can be used for cladding and you can also revitalize your surroundings with ease. At the end of the day, you can also use metal boxes as storage, or restore furniture to its former glory. If you do this then you will soon find that you can bring a lot of life and originality to your home. Look at everything here, whether it is copper basins, sinks or old furniture. Everything can be given a new lease of life if you know what you are doing, so be mindful of that if you can.
Wood is What you Need
It is sometimes impossible for you to achieve the rustic decor you are going for if you don’t have a heavy dose of wood. Wood, at the end of the day, is one of the best ways for you to bring out the natural elements of your room. You can opt for wooden cladding, ceiling beams, wall panels and more. Light fittings can also be made out of wood, so make sure that you keep that in mind as well. Of course, when it comes to wood, try and make sure that you opt for something that is both light and untreated. If you can do this then you will be able to retain a lot of natural character and this can work in your favor.
Choose Earthy Colors
Do away with the dark feature wall. It’s probably not going to work. Instead, try and go for an earthy or rustic color. Terracotta, metallic brass, antique bronze or anything else similar is ideal if you want to add a lot of depth and warmth. Don’t forget to incorporate this across your accessories as well. You can opt for lighting, planters, vases and more that have a very similar level of warmth if you want to go for the rustic look.
Natural Materials
Ditch the chrome. There is no room for it if you want to achieve the old and rustic interior you are going for. The main thing you need to know about the rustic trend is that it keeps things natural and that you should try and use accessories where possible. Raw fibers or even hessian is the greatest accompaniment for a home since they keep in line with the earthy tones you are going for. Rugs and cushions in the same type of fabric will also help you to tie in the theme even more.
Use a Range of Materials
When you take a look at the most stunning rustic interiors out there, you will soon see that they have a range of materials that help to exaggerate character. A lot of them are lucky enough to have exposed brick walls or even original wooden floors. If you don’t have anything like this then don’t despair. There are a lot of things you can do to try and get the look you are going for. Choose from brick slips or even floor tiles to get the result you need. These are very easy to install and they remain to be the perfect way to get what you are going for.
Industrial Design
One thing to know about older interiors is that they tend to love industrial design. If you want a stylish approach for the trend you are going for then one thing you can do is recognize any subtle nuances. You need to know the difference between modern rustic and farmhouse rustic. A lot of this comes down to the design. Modern rustic tends to focus on more of an industrial trend, such as live edge wood or even raw, unfinished materials. Stay clear of anything with a colorful finish and take the time to incorporate simple designs. If you can do this then you will get the theme you are going for in no time at all. By doing this, you can also give your materials the chance to shine too, which is great.
Get Inspired
Expand your existing mood board by taking the time to find other trends on sites such as Pinterest. You can also use hashtags on Instagram if you want. Of course, you need to use social platforms like this as it is a very good way for you to draw inspiration as well as getting the overall look you are going for. Take note of what works together and what doesn’t, as well as what you like. If you can do this then you are well on your way to getting the look you are going for with your home.
Choose your Patterns Well
It is also imperative that you choose your patterns well. Expand your mod by taking the time to search for patterns that suit your rustic theme. It may be that you search for industrial or grunge themes on social media or that you opt for rustic scenes. Either way, geometric prints and even herringbone work very well if you want to go for something that suits your textiles or even a throw. You can also go for faux fur if you want a bit more of a Scandi vibe. The best thing about doing this is that it helps you to get the look you are going for without having to worry about a thing. Another way for you to get the patterns you want would be for you to go for a juxtaposition with certain materials or colors. Choose a very subtle decorative element that is etched into a raw metal as this will give you a stylish contrast. It will also help you to soften the industrial style as well as making everything much more suited to an in-home setting. Don’t know what to go for? Why not opt for a stick on wood wall?
Don’t Leave a Single Surface
You mustn’t leave a single surface untouched. One key similarity that is often present in several rustic interiors is the style. It extends to every inch of the room and it is a very important point that you have to consider when achieving the rustic look. A few accessories are probably not going to get the impact you are going for if you combine them with a pink carpet. Every element in the room has to be joined together and you also need to make sure that you concentrate on the walls and the ceilings. If you can do this then you will soon find that it is easier for you to get the colors right and that you can also set the tone for the other parts of the room.
Be Wary of Limitations
Sometimes mixing and matching is a good thing. If you want to get a good result out of your home, sometimes mixing up the woods that you go for is the way to go. It may be that you decide to go for oak and walnut. Don’t be tempted to just opt for one type of wood because if you do then you may find that your home doesn’t look as homely as it could and this is the last thing you need. If you don’t want to clash then opt for one type of wood and then accent it by adding one other type. Your accent wood should take up around 25% of your decor, so if you have a wooden dining table that is made out of oak, as well as a side table and a mirror, then you could probably add a walnut wine rack and not have it look out of place. The mistake comes when you try and add too many types of wood across the board, so try and be mindful of this if you can as it will influence the room and the look you are going for.
