My kids do get kind of bored with learning homeschool geography once in a while. Though I am a creative person, I lack the extra time in a day to make our everyday learning interesting with hands-on activities. I was so happy to be given a Landmark Subscription Kit of India to try out with my kids.

Landmark Subscription Kit
A Landmark Subscription Kit (made for ages 7 to 12) is a themed activity box based on a different country each month. Your kids will feel like young detectives or globe-trotting secret agents embarking on a mission. Each box is a new assignment, with puzzles to crack, logic challenges to solve, and brain games to decipher. There are intriguing clues, recipes for international tasting, info cards, guides, optional short videos, and unique souvenirs from countries like India, Morocco, Australia, and Japan.
It fosters critical thinking, curiosity, family teamwork, and cultural awareness. Kids solve a case while learning about geography, food, history, language, animals, and social studies.
What is in a Landmark Subscription Kit?
Our “India” theme box was a colorful and decorative box that is a standard subscription box size 9.5″ long x 7″ wide x 2.5″ high. This is what we found in it:
- tissue paper
- trading cards
- guide book with mystery clues and puzzles and comics to read
- country souvenirs
- recipe
- large fold out map
Trading Cards
We found a pack of trading cards in the box. We noticed that each card showed a building and talked about a city the building was in. (My kids noticed that the card matches up with a place on the map.)
Guide Book
SOLVE THE MYSTERY. EXPLORE THE WORLD. There is a booklet inside with a mystery to solve. Ours was about 23 pages long and had word puzzles, and activities to do like deciphering a code and logic puzzles to solve. There is a QR code to scan at the front of the booklet to give information about the mystery.
Inside the guide are comics to read that give the mystery story and lead to the next clue.
My kids all take turns doing something in the guide book. I read the comics out loud to them and show them the photos, which is helpful to Megan, who can't read yet.
The kids learn more about the country as they are doing this, but it seems like an adventure or a game to play – rather than a boring geography lesson.
The kids really learn more than geography here. They are learning logical thinking, art and more.
Country Souvenirs
Our kit included a little pin with the flag of India on it, a paper tiger to make, and a paper rickshaw tuk-tuk to build. The DIY activities are very simple to do. There are punch outs and directions.
Our paper tiger instructions gave information about the history of tigers in Asia.
Some glue is needed to keep the paper folded projects together and make them more durable. They are printed on thick cardstock, which makes them durable as well.
The rickshaw we received was so interesting to us Americans. We have never seen this type of vehicle in Wisconsin. Our traveling adult son, age 23, who has been many places in the world told us it is also known as a tuk-tuk. My boy, Mitchell, liked pronouncing that word.
Recipe
A recipe was included and when I first looked at it, I wondered why some of the letters and numbers were colored here and there, rather than black or white. I found out when we did one of the puzzles, we had to look for these codes in the recipe! How clever! We have not prepared our recipe yet as we didn't have all the ingredients on hand, but we might try it someday.
Large Fold Out Map
A colorful map is given with a picture of the flag. It shows the population, capital, government, language, religions, currency, main industries, national animal and national colors. You can scan QR codes to learn more about each region.
What My Kids Say About It
Miranda, age 13, said she enjoyed making the DIY activities: paper tiger and paper rickshaw tuk-tuk the best.
Mason, age 11, said he liked reading the comics.
Mitchell, age 7, absolutely loved everything about it and said he wants another one!
Megan, age 5, said she liked using mom's phone to scan the QR codes.
Why I like It
I do have a full geography curriculum that I use to teach my children at each of their respective ages, but I like that this is a fun activity to do, while still learning and that my kids can do it together as a team. It is also a bonus that I don't need to put hours into research and lesson planning. This kit is all set and ready to go! “Creative convenience in a box,” is what I would call it.
I also like that I don't have to spend thousands of dollars on travel! We can learn something about this country right from the comforts of my own home.
My daughters were each a year outside of the intended ages, but still enjoyed it. If you are a homeschooling family with several children, I recommend getting a Landmark Subscription Kit to try out.
