My little guy is turning six in about three weeks so it's time for me to think of what to get him! As long as I am considering that special gift, I thought I would make a post out of it in case you are shopping for gifts for a six year old boy as well!

Great Gifts for a Six Year Old Boy
Building Toys are a great gift to give because you can add more pieces for your next gift.
One item that we found a few pieces of in an abandoned storage unit was [amazon_textlink asin='B002NGOH1W' text='Magformers' template='ProductLink' store='neededintheho-20′ marketplace='US' link_id='11162356-a609-11e8-9cb3-6d84badfb739′]. We had never heard of them before. We only had a few pieces, but the kids love them and play with them all the time and in so many different ways. They stick them on items to see if they are magnetic. They try them on hinges, doorknobs, the dog collar! We thought it would be fun to get more of them so they can be even more creative with them.
Mason already has some [amazon_textlink asin='B00NHQFA1I' text='classic Lego bricks' template='ProductLink' store='neededintheho-20′ marketplace='US' link_id='795d1feb-a60a-11e8-a460-2fe08768e064′] and spends long periods of time building, so it would be nice to add more.
Since I am pregnant with my 8th child due in March, I am thinking about what can he play with that is “quiet” while the baby is napping? Or a quiet activity while I am reading a homeschool book to him (and nursing the baby at the same time). One idea I like is these [amazon_textlink asin='B004BBGMK6′ text='Soft & Safe Building Blocks' template='ProductLink' store='neededintheho-20′ marketplace='US' link_id='6d530ba5-a60b-11e8-82a3-0505a2a2a620′]. They won't make a racket when the tower falls over and are lightweight so they may do things ordinary blocks won't do. Another pro, if his 2 year old brother throws a block at him, it won't hurt!
You can't go wrong with a nice set of wooden blocks to give the kids hours of imaginative play. This set is sold on Etsy by KubiyaGames.
Problem Solving Toys
I like toys and games that help my child to learn and think creatively. These are some great ideas to try!
My son is interested in vehicles and watching cars go by our front window and telling me what type and color of a vehicle it is so I think he would like [amazon_textlink asin='B00004WJSN' text='Rush Hour Jr.' template='ProductLink' store='neededintheho-20′ marketplace='US' link_id='93b08e87-a60c-11e8-92a3-f91ce7c7e5c9′] It is a fun, single player game with 40 puzzle challenges to help him think logically.
This is a great way to teach about colors and patterns with a busy bag of pegs and foam boards with pattern cards from CuriousMindsBusyBags sold on Etsy.
We love to get out big puzzles and put them together. He doesn't have this [amazon_textlink asin='B0063VMDM8′ text='floor puzzle from Melissa & Doug' template='ProductLink' store='neededintheho-20′ marketplace='US' link_id='9e3800e1-a61e-11e8-be22-5bb39cf8416f'] yet.
Pretend Play Toys
At this time in his life, Mason says he wants to be a doctor when he grows up and he is already talking about being a doctor for Halloween as well. With his birthday in September, it's a great time to give him a pretend play doctor costume that can double as his Halloween costume! I like this one sold on Etsy that comes with a doctor coat, scrubs, a stethoscope and a cardboard doctor bag in the size you choose by MyLittleDoc.
There are times that he likes to have a good old fashioned plastic sword fight with his 12 year old brother. The older brother has a [amazon_textlink asin='B000I41ANE' text='plastic sword and shield set' template='ProductLink' store='neededintheho-20′ marketplace='US' link_id='fe183d9e-a617-11e8-b34b-558ab5e291d5′], but Mason doesn't yet so he has been using the empty gift wrap cardboard tubes as swords!
[amazon_textlink asin='B00B06IC76′ text='Lego Castle Dragon Mountain' template='ProductLink' store='neededintheho-20′ marketplace='US' link_id='6d4ceb97-a61d-11e8-90e1-e30705c4f396′] is a great Lego castle set and it is not tied to a popular TV show or book so it should be “timeless” and be able to be used by children for years to come. I say this with the wisdom of being a mom of a 19 year old and I am pregnant and due in March so I have seen TV shows and popular books come and go. This can also be built without too many “special” pieces. The dragon looks pretty awesome, too!
His Favorites To Add To
He has a Thomas the Train Wooden Railway set on a train table and loves to receive something to add to his set. He plays with it so often that we keep the train table in the dining room! One idea we have for an addition to it is a [amazon_textlink asin='B00BM2V2XE' text='Thomas the Train Wooden Railway Train Wash set' template='ProductLink' store='neededintheho-20′ marketplace='US' link_id='9916433a-a61f-11e8-ba41-211453d5864e'].
What boy doesn't love Matchbox cars? He may not need another car, but he could use more storage space. He would love this personalized car storage box from ilovefavors on Etsy.
