As the family grows, our needs change, or we even start to consider multi-generational living with our elderly parents or adult children, we may need to reconsider just how much space our home offers. Having enough space is one of the most vital factors in comfortable living, and thankfully, there are multiple solutions for how to address the need for additional space. We’ll look at some of your options, what they entail, and whether or not they might work based on your circumstances.

Knock Down Internal Walls
Sometimes, the problem with your home isn’t so much that you don’t have enough space to meet your needs, but rather that the home doesn’t feel spacious or open enough. Rearranging the space can sometimes be just as helpful as adding more space; to that end, knocking down an internal wall might be just what you need. So long as you’re careful, in that you don’t go near any structural supporting walls, you can easily open cramped layouts and create a more flowing design through kitchens, dining rooms, and living areas. Open-plan living is becoming a lot more popular, and knocking down a wall is typically the least expensive way to make it a reality.
Finish The Basement Or Attic
Your home may already have space that you can make good use of, such as your attic or your basement. If that valuable square footage isn’t already being utilized to its full potential, it could make for a functional living space. Basements are often used as guest suites, a home gym, or entertainment areas, while an attic can easily become an additional bedroom, office, or creative workspace. You need to consider what the space needs in terms of insulation, lighting, ventilation, and moisture contro lto make it comfortable and safe to spend extensive periods of time in. Some structural adjustments may be needed, depending on how the home is built, as well. These are lengthy projects, but they can offer the greatest potential in terms of the amount of space added.
Build A Home Extension
If you need a few extra feet on one end of the home, then building an extension can be one of the most effective ways to gain it. This can be to make for a more open and spacious design, adding onto an existing room, or you can beef up the budget to make an extension that allows for the addition of a whole new room, such as a second bedroom or an orangerie. Extensions do typically come with the need to consider planning regulations, however, especially if you’re extending to the side or the front of the existing building. This can make them take a little longer to complete than the other options.
Add An Outbuilding Or ADU
There is a way to add more space to your home while keeping your existing home unchanged. If you have a lot of exterior or garden space, then a garden outbuilding or accessory dwelling unit (or ADU) could be just the thing for you. These are wholly separate structures built outside of the home, and can serve as guest homes, home offices, studios, gyms, multigenerational living spaces, and much more. ADUs typically include kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces, so they’re great for adding totally independent living spaces that allow people to remain close to the rest of the home. Again, you might need to consider local planning regulations, but these typically go in the backyard, which is less subject to general scrutiny.
Moving To A Different Home
If the current property simply is not able to meet your space needs, even with a little work, then your most practical option might be to move to a different home. There are some problems that a renovation or extension simply is not able to meet, whether it’s due to planning restrictions or not having enough space. Relocating gives you the chance to choose a home that’s perfectly suited to your space needs from the beginning, and offers you the opportunity to improve your lifestyle and location at the same time. Of course, buying property is a much longer process and typically a good deal more expensive, but it might be the only feasible option if getting more space is that important to you.
The solution that works best for you might depend on a range of factors, such as the space that you currently have available, the kind of budget at your disposal, and even the reason you need to expand in the first place. Hopefully, the options above help you find the right path to suit you and your family.
