Your home might be structurally sound, but it can also sometimes look like it's falling apart if you're not maintaining it properly. The good news is that you can fix many of the problems your property is facing fairly easily. All you have to do is adopt the right maintenance strategy.

Water is sneaking in

The main reason homes run down is when water starts seeping in. Once moisture gets into the building materials themselves, it starts to degrade them very quickly, and they can look awful after just a season. Think about what it's like when your window seals are degraded and water makes its way into your wooden frames. They look terrible, and paint starts peeling.

Solving this problem is relatively easy. All you need to do is identify the source of the water sneaking in and plug it. Usually, this source will be either the roof or the foundation. It's one of the two. Get a surveyor to come over, and then find some roofing experts or structural engineers who can fix the problem quickly.

Poor airflow

Poor air flow is another thing that can make your home look like it's falling apart. Even if the damage to your property isn't significant, too much warm, moist air trapped in attics and crawl spaces can lead to blistering paint and bubbling drywall.

The trick to fixing this is to improve your air flow and figure out where it's going wrong. Most of the time, if you have an air flow issue, it means that your property is in violation of building codes. You can get a structural engineer or a surveyor to come over and tell you what the problem is so you can fix it. Sometimes it's as simple as unblocking an existing vent or adding new vents to the attic.

Low quality siding

Low-quality siding is another issue that a lot of homeowners face. Over time, it starts to look cracked and chipped and can begin to peel or even bend in strange directions.

Fortunately, there are plenty of companies these days offering siding repair. These outfits are full of professionals who can quickly repair or replace your existing siding with something better and newer. You can either repaint wooden siding or install fibreglass, cement, or vinyl siding, which lasts much longer and is more weather-resistant.

Sticking doors

Your home can also look like it's falling apart if you have sticking doors. Sticking doors is an annoying problem to have because it's sometimes difficult to work out what is causing it.

Harmless causes involve doors swelling because of interior humidity during summer months. However, multiple doors across your home are sticking year-round and letting through visible light, it could be a sign that you have a problem with your foundations or structure. The whole thing could be shifting.

If the issue is doors swelling, look for ways to reduce humidity and shave off part of the door if necessary to allow it to open and close freely. If you have more than one door moving, creaking, or sticking, call a structural engineer and ask them to find out what's wrong with the overall structure of your property.
