How To Make Sure Your Backyard Will Look Great In The Spring

Winter can feel as though it lasts a long time, but when we finally start to come out the other side and notice that spring is in the air, it’s a wonderful feeling that can make us so much happier and more positive – it’s almost like a fresh start.

Noticing things around you, like birds singing and flowers blooming, is great, but what if you could have that feeling at home? What if you could look out of your window or step out of your door and instantly feel comforted because spring has arrived?

The good news is you definitely can have that, but you’ll need to put some effort in first. You can get that feeling from your own backyard, of course, but it does mean you have to make sure it’s going to look great in the spring and do some work before you get to that special time of year. So with that in mind, here are some ways you can make sure your backyard will look great in the spring; read on to find out more.

Get Rid Of The Leaves

It might be that there aren’t any leaves left on your lawn or flowerbeds by this point in the year, as the wind and rain may well have removed them for you, but if there is anything left, that’s a job you’ll need to do. Grab a rake and remove all the leaves as soon as you can, and you can have a much healthier, more spring-like garden by the time the better weather rolls around.

The issue is that leaves rot and can put some harmful bacteria into the ground beneath them. On top of that, when there’s a layer of leaves over everything, the sunlight can’t penetrate, so if you’re trying to grow a lush lawn or some flowers, it’s going to be a lot harder, and your backyard might not be ready for spring.

Treat Your Lawn

When you’ve cleared your lawn of leftover leaves, it’s a good idea to use lawn care products to put back any nutrients that might have been removed and to give the lawn a good feed – something it might not have had too much of over winter.

Grass is an interesting thing because it does tend to sleep over the winter period – you’ll notice there comes a time when you give your lawn one last cut, and then you don’t have to do anything again until spring. However, even though it might not look as though much is happening, the truth is that it’s still alive and it’s just waiting for the spring sun to wake it up, so the more you can do to keep it healthy, the better it’s going to look when you need it to cheer you up.

Add Mulch

If you want the plants in your backyard to bloom and be full of color when spring comes, you need to protect them over the winter, and one way to do that is to add mulch to their soil. The mulch will put a protective layer over the plants and their roots, meaning that even in a harsh frost, they should be able to make it through.

You can make your own mulch (those leaves we mentioned earlier can be a base for it if you want to use them for something), but you can also buy it quite easily, so there’s no reason not to use it.

Are Your Potted Plants Okay?

Some people don’t plant flowers in their backyards due to space, their own mobility issues, or just because they don’t like how it looks, but they will have plants and flowers in pots on patios and along pathways, for example – maybe that’s how you like to do things.

If it is, then you need to check that your potted plants are okay as winter goes by and spring approaches – even if they’re in pots, they can still have a lot of the same issues as plants in the ground can have. One of the biggest problems is that the roots can get too wet, usually due to the weather (although over-watering won’t help either), and when that happens, they’ll die and rot. That’s why you need to drill some holes in the bottoms of the pots so that water can drain away much more easily, giving your lovely plants the chance to live and bloom how you want them to.
