It’s so amazing getting to have a pool in your backyard, right? Backyard pools just seem to have a way of making your backyard feel rich like you’re the rich family on the block. It doesn’t even matter if it’s true or not; they’re just so luxurious that it just emit that rich feeling. So overall, it’s amazing, right? But if we're being real, it might look more like a big ol' blue blob than the sleek, serene paradise you see in Architectural Digest. Maybe it’s a temporary Intex setup or a more permanent installation, but either way, it's not exactly the centerpiece of a glamorous outdoor space.

Oftentimes, they’re not exactly the most luxurious looking when put into a backyard, but all it really takes is some landscaping techniques to fix it up. So, here’s exactly what you need to know to make your pool the star of the show!
You’ll Need to Start with the Surroundings
Alright, so let’s be honest: it’s not just the pool itself that makes those Pinterest and magazine-worthy images pop. It’s the entire environment surrounding it. Ideally, you should try and look into landscape design services to help you out; for the most part, the professionals know how to make your pool (or soon-to-be pool) work with the garden and how to make the garden work with the pool.
Yes, even those temporary ones that families get out only for the summer they can design a garden that works with it. But if you insist on DIYing this (because professional services can be expensive), then it’s best to look into these tips to help you out.
Lush Greenery
Nothing says “luxury” like a well-manicured lawn or a bed of vibrant plants. Surround your pool with a mix of tall grasses, tropical plants, and maybe even some flowering bushes. So, overall, these elements bring life, texture, and color to your space, making the pool feel like it’s nestled in a private oasis.
Hardscaping
The materials you choose for the area around your pool make a huge difference. Instead of basic concrete, consider going for natural stone, wood decking, or even textured pavers. You need to keep in mind that these materials add warmth and visual interest, elevating the overall look.
Fencing and Privacy Screens
If your backyard is visible to the world, adding a stylish fence or privacy screens can help create a more intimate, secluded feel. Ideally, you’ll need to choose materials that complement your pool's design—be it something with a modern metal look, rustic wood, or even a living wall of greenery.
Your Furnishings Matter
While you don’t have to go all out and extra like how they did it back in the 1960s (you can watch Palm Royale to get an idea of the poolside styles), at the same time, doing something basic and boring pretty much ruins the purpose of making this a spotlight. So, you’re usually going to see gorgeous lounges and chic umbrellas, and that’s basically the goal- that is exactly what you need! The right furniture can make your pool feel like a million bucks—even if it’s not.
Loungers and Daybeds
It’s all going to start right here, you’ll need to invest in comfortable, stylish loungers or a daybed. Ideally, you’ll need to go for durable materials that can withstand the elements, but don’t skimp on comfort. But on top of that, you’ll need to add plush outdoor cushions in coordinating colors to tie everything together.
Outdoor Dining
If you’ve got the space, a dining area near the pool is a must. So, just picture a sleek table with comfortable chairs, perfect for al fresco dinners or casual drinks. You can even add a pergola overhead to define the space and offer some shade. Now, a lot of hotels have poolside dining and pergolas that reach towards the pool. If you’re able to do something like that, by all means, go for it, because this right here is the epitome of luxury!
Shade Structures
A pergola was just mentioned right above, but it helps to mention that again. But it’s not just pergolas, let’s go back to those large parasols/ umbrellas that backyards tend to have, or even a cabana! Basically, every pool needs some shade, and again, this just helps in adding style to the garden too.
Outdoor Rugs
Alright, so this isn’t technically furniture, but nonetheless, it still deserves a lot of attention (and is usually sold at furniture stores anyway). An outdoor rug can tie together your seating areas and add a pop of pattern or color. Plus, it makes the space feel more like an extension of your indoor living area. Ideally, you should buy one right when the summer season is ending, but you can usually get a massive discount.
