How To Make Your Decking Area Pop

Turning your decking area into a space that pops is a challenge. While you can easily give it a spa-like feel, if you want to take it to the next level, it's more difficult. Fortunately, this guide is here to help. We look at some of the ways that you can make upgrades or add smart lighting to make the entire outdoor area even better.

Define zones

One of the best places to start is to define the zones in your decking area. These can be for relaxing, lounging or dining or whatever you choose. If you can incorporate multi-level zones and it makes the decked area more interesting visually, you can also use it to maximize flow and give people private spaces when they need it. Adding rugs temporarily for outdoor areas while it's not raining is also useful; just make sure they're fit for verbal.

Bring indoor comfort outdoors

The next thing you want to do is think about how you can bring indoor comfort outdoors. If you can mimic indoor style, stuffed sofas and textured throws, then you're in business. Adding little extras like trays for drinks or decorative elements makes it more likely that people are actually going to use the space, even when the weather isn't ideal. When you adopt these little strategies, it blurs the distinction between indoor and outdoor areas. Suddenly you have an extra 200 square feet to play within your property that you never had before.

Mix materials

It is also a good idea to mix materials when you have an outdoor decking area. Patterned decking is becoming more popular these days, as are synthetic options. You can also arrange boards in a geometric or fishbone layout that makes them more engaging.

If you pair this with western red cedar panelling on your home or hardwood screens, you can take the effect to the next level. Combinations of wood often look better than a single material used alone.

Add a focal point

In addition to this, you'll want to explore the idea of adding a focal point to your deck area. This isn't something that many deck design and insulation companies will talk about, so you'll need to be proactive with it. For example, a focal point could be a fire pit or a fire table. It could also be a fireplace that you place outside, but you put outside with seating around it. The presence of fire immediately attracts the eye, but just make sure that it's safe to use around your wood decking.

If that's not an option, there are other things you can do, like including raised flower beds, herbs, herb gardens, or even fountains.

Add a pergola or overhead feature

Finally, you'll want to think about adding a pergola or some sort of overhead feature. These provide partial shade in the summer and can protect from rain. They also add definition to your outdoor spaces and make them feel cosier, especially if you have climbing vines.
