I love having physical textbooks with color photos and great Christian information, so I was thrilled when Miranda and I were given the opportunity to review the One Nation Under God Set (Student Book and Teacher Guide), from Master Books.

Master Books American History High School Course
The One Nation Under God Set from Master Books came with a Student Book and a Teacher Guide. With all the information in these two books, this is a full credit High School Course. It's best suited for 10th grade and up, though a solid 9th grader could also complete it. This curriculum gives an overview of American History, going into significant depth regarding the worldview of historical figures and covers some lesser-known yet important people not typically found in high school textbooks.
The Textbook
There are colorful photos, illustrations, graphs, original writings, letters, maps and more throughout the One Nation Under God textbook. The book is organized into nine units, with each unit containing four weekly lessons. Each lesson is further broken down into five daily exercises to establish a predictable routine for the student.
The additional resources section is very interesting. There are many reference pieces like George Washington's Proclamation Concerning A Day of Thanksgiving, for example. The glossary was really interesting for us to look through with words like “blackout drills,” “Dutch Patroon” and “Melting Pot.”
The Curriculum basically begins by exploring the why behind European exploration and colonization. It follows the flow of history through the Revolution, the Constitution, the Civil War, industrialism, and the World Wars, ending with the most recent presidential election. This course does address complex and shameful parts of history, like slavery, from a Christian point of view with depth and maturity appropriate for a high schooler.
Every lesson concludes with a Greatest Takeaway in American History that summarizes the most important concept for the student to remember. This history curriculum is designed for independent study, requiring very little parental involvement, though the Teacher's Guide includes optional discussion questions and group activities for those who want more engagement. We do some of both. Sometimes, I will read to Miranda, and sometimes she will read on her own while I am working with one of her siblings.
Christian Worldview
I feel so safe giving my high schooler Master Books because from my past experience with their curriculum, I know it will be fully saturated with biblical truth. This is a top priority for my homeschool. I don’t have to choose between enjoyable social study credits and our faith. I can get both in one. We especially loved reading the “Biblical Worldview Analysis” sections in this textbook.
An Example of a Biblical Worldview Analysis section
Every lesson includes a biblical worldview analysis and sections on cultural development to help students process history through the lens of Scripture.
As an example, on page 275 in the One Nation Under God textbook, we read about General Robert E. Lee and his submission of the Amnesty Oath, which inexplicably vanished from the official process. Instead of reaching the president, it was discovered decades later that Secretary of State William Seward had given the application to a friend as a personal memento. For the remainder of his life, Lee lived as a man without a country, unable to fully reclaim the rights and privileges of American citizenship. Lee's Christian faith played a significant role in shaping he character and guiding his actions during this period as he often spoke about the importance of humility, forgiveness, and trust in divine providence. More than a century after Lee's death, the forgotten slip of paper that bore his Amnesty Oath was rediscovered by an archivist at the National Archives. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a resolution posthumously restoring Lee's citizenship. The textbook then goes into saying that, “It shows us how history is not shaped only by battles and big decisions but also by human mistakes, moments of grace, and sometimes even lost paperwork.” We thought that was a really great point.

The Teacher Guide
The Teacher Guide gives you a suggested daily schedule for a 180 day school year. It tells what to do each day in both the textbook and the workbook. That is so handy for me. I don't even have to lesson plan for this subject!
There are work pages with exercises to do to help remember what was read. There is also a few cumulative review tests throughout the book. The answers for these are in the back of Teacher Guide.

An Interview With The Author
I highly recommend you watch this video of the author giving her thoughts and heart behind writing this textbook set. I watched it and really enjoyed hearing all the prayer and how much fun she had making this, as well as her heart for teenagers. She has homeschooled her own teens.
Conclusion
Miranda and I enjoy this curriculum due to it's interesting topics, some less known things that happened in history, the colorful photos and it's ease of use. We think you will enjoy it too. Check out the One Nation Under God Set (Student Book and Teacher Guide).
