A roof is the most important part of any home. If you’re a homeowner, it’s important that you take the right steps to maintain your roof. All roofs will eventually experience wear and tear and will need to be repaired. Below are some of the common mistakes that people make when it comes to roof repairs.

Ignoring obvious problems

Some roof issues are obvious such as rainwater leaks or a visibly sagging roof. It’s essential that you don’t put off repairs on such roof issues – once a roof problem has become noticeable, it is usually quite serious, and the problem could quickly get worse. Leaky roofs can cause huge amounts of damage, while a sagging roof could be at risk of collapsing. Arrange repairs as soon as you can to avoid even more costly damage.

Not carrying out regular roof inspections

Not all roof problems are obvious, but some can still be serious. Regular roof inspections can help to detect hidden issues with your roof that could need repairing. Inspections could also allow you to spot problems early before they get serious and more expensive. It’s recommended that you arrange a roof inspection every one or two years. Some roofing companies will include free annual servicing for a certain period after installing a new roof – take advantage of such deals.

DIYing repairs without taking safety precautions

A lot of things can go wrong when carrying out DIY roof repairs. Falling off a roof or falling through a roof is probably the biggest danger to be wary of. Wear the right footwear and consider using a safety harness (especially on steep sloped roofs). When using a ladder to access a roof, make sure that someone is at the bottom of the ladder to hold it still. Of course, the best way to stay safe when repairing your roof is to stay on the ground – roofing installation experts will know how to approach your roof and which safety measures to take.

Using the wrong materials

Another common DIY mistake is using the wrong materials. While most homeowners know if their roof is made of asphalt or timber, choosing the right asphalt shingles or timber shakes to match your existing roof can be a challenge. Get it wrong and it might not look right, plus it may not fit snugly. You can even cause problems by using the wrong type of nail to secure a shingle. This is why it’s worth hiring professionals to repair your roof.

Not knowing when to invest in a new roof

Keep having to carry out repairs on your roof? It might be time to install an entirely new roof. Once roofs reach a certain age they can start to experience frequent issues. This is usually when it’s a good time to replace the entire roof. A lot of people put off a roof replacement because it is such an expensive job. However, you could save money in the long run by not having to constantly call out a roof repair service.
