When it comes around to the colder months of the year, you will certainly want to do all that you can to ensure that your home remains as toasty and warm as possible. While there are many different ways to heat up your home correctly, there are also all manner of mistakes that you can make along the way. The art of avoiding these properly is one that is certainly worth learning. This way, you are not going to fall into some of the traps that have been fallen into time and time again. So, here are just a few of the most common home heating mistakes for you to avoid.

Not getting your heating devices services regularly

The correct time of the year to service your home’s heating devices is exactly when you are not going to need to use them. A big part of this comes down to the fact that if anything goes wrong during the winter months, you are bound to have to pay a mighty premium to put it right again. Therefore, you certainly need to call out the HVAC services to ensure that issues do not become bigger than they need to be. Bear in mind that heating devices can go wrong in a number of different ways based on how old they are, the brand, and the number of faults that they have already suffered over the years as well. If you get your devices serviced regularly, it is much more likely that they are going to stand the test of time.

Not dealing with drafts quickly

If you notice that there is a draft in your home environment, this is not a problem that is going to fix itself. Therefore, you certainly need to make sure that you deal with it in any way that you can. One option that you have available is to use a draft excluder if it is around the door areas. Another way is to use draft strips around the windows. You may even be able to fill them up with caulk. The quicker that you are able to deal with these drafts, the less heating is going to be lost from your home.

Failing to insulate in the right places

While home insulation may represent an initial cost outlay that you are going to have to deal with, it is better to do this rather than allow heat to simply escape through the roof and the walls. Once you have insulated the right areas, you should notice the benefits coming for years to come thanks to a warmer home and lower heating bills as well. As well as putting insulation in the walls and the attic, you may even want to check out the pipes too. If you are not certain about whether or not this is the right option for you, it is always a possibility to call in the experts to get their confirmation.

Not using the curtains properly

While it may well seem like the curtains of a home are fairly irrelevant, they can actually have a significant impact on ensuring that heat is being retained properly. When the sun is shining on the windows, you will want as much of the heat as possible to flow in so you can warm up your home for free. However, when the sun goes down, you can then close them again – especially if you have thicker drapes – as this will help it to stay in and not immediately escape again. When you are trying to keep your home cooler during the summer months of the year, it is going to be worth taking on the exact opposite advice.

Not allowing air to flow through

Another one of the issues that you may find when you are trying to keep your home cooler is that you are simply not allowing the air to flow through properly. This may well mean that you are keeping certain doors closed and not letting the air circulate as it needs to. Another alternative is that you are not opening windows as and when needed. In terms of the advice on this, you may well not simply want to leave windows open all day, every day. If the heat outside is warmer than on the inside, you will simply be letting warm air flow in your home and heating it up even further. Having some external and internal thermometers can be highly useful as this will tell you whether or not opening up the windows is actually a good idea.

Failing to put the thermostat in the right location

While it may well seem like it is a relatively small issue, it can actually have a big impact if you do not put the thermostat in the right location. For example, if you have it above your radiators, this is going to give off an inaccurate reading. As a direct result of this, the temperature that you set it is inevitably going to be impactful. As well as moving it away from any sources of heat, you will also want to make sure that there are no drafts causing an issue. Ultimately, you may well find that the simple act of repositioning a thermostat can make all the difference.

Not negotiating a new deal with your supplier

The final point comes down to making sure that you are getting the best deal at all times. There is simply no point in overpaying when you do not have to. Many suppliers will put their costs up at the end of the calendar year and hope that customers do not notice. However, you don’t want to fall into this trap and it is definitely worth doing something about.

These are just some of the mistakes that you can avoid with your home’s heating that should make a big difference to your costs and will hopefully leave you in a situation where you can enjoy a warmer home when you need it the most.
