We often discuss making a house a home, but of course, it’s important to note that doing so is not a strict science. One individual's taste may differ wildly from another. You may love the look of a large stately home, for example, but feel that the wood paneling and formal decorations feel a little stiff inside, serving a space you like to admire, but would never want to live in.

Perhaps you even have friends with a sharp design eye, able to curate beautiful show-room-like interiors, all except for the final detail, that sense of comfort and place so necessary for a house to become a home. If you’ve recently renovated or decorated and feel that your home is just a bit more clinical than you’d like it, it’s good to consider how or why that is.
At a time when many have completed (or are starting) their spring cleaning, now is a perfect time to consider how to make a house a home, without making it feel messy, stuffy, or tired.
Calm Fabrics, Personal Crafts
Textiles and fabrics instantly warm up a space and make it feel more homey. Cool minimalism has its place, sure, but soft, cozy fabrics provide an inviting, comfy vibe that plain design lacks. Natural fibers like cotton, linen, and wool in muted, calming shades work well. Boucle fabric with its nubbly, snuggly texture is perfect for throws, pillows, and even upholstered furniture as well, and provides a fun handmade crafted approach. Displaying those handmade crafts like knitted blankets, embroidered pillows, or woven baskets adds that human, imperfect touch machines or soulless home furnishing stores can't recreate.
Wall Gardens, Houseplants, Garden Accessibility
Say what you’d like about nature, but no one could accuse it of being clinical. Bringing the outdoors in through plants and greenery helps to provide that cosy atmosphere, then. Dedicated living wall gardens or hung planters quite literally breathe life into interior spaces.
Even just adding lush potted plants in rooms you hang out in most offers a refreshing, vibrant element that keeps areas feeling energized and fresh. Having living things as part of your decorative approach taps into that basic human need for nature – it’s why timber beams are so timeless. Easy outdoor garden access from main rooms also helps blend interior and exterior settings for a free-flowing, accessible feel, perfect for the summer, even if you need to install French doors.
Artwork, Photos, Memories
What could no one replicate or steal from you, even if they were to read a thorough blog revealing your most personal design preferences? For almost everyone, this would include memories and meaningful moments. Gallery walls showcasing framed family photos, kids' artwork, trophies, certificates, and vacation snaps – these all connect your home to you.
Hunt for unique artworks that speak to you – paintings, sculptures, mixed media – whatever resonates emotionally. These carefully chosen yet personal elements create a real sense of character. Nostalgic items from travels or inherited vintage pieces that spark fond memories work too.
With this advice, you’ll be sure to beat the “clinic” allegations and design a beautiful home of love and personality.

Eden says
If your home feels too clinical, it’s time to add warmth and personality! Try incorporating cozy textures like throw blankets, rugs, or cushions. Add color through artwork, plants, or accent walls to break up the sterile feel. Warm lighting and personal touches like family photos or unique decor pieces can also make your space feel more inviting and lived-in.
