Most of us love the sun when it graces us with its presence, but just like too much sun without any protection can be bad for our skin, it can also be bad for our homes too.

That being the case, let’s take a look at some of the best things you can do to protect your property from the sun right now.

1. Curtain Call for Curtains and Blinds

Curtains and blinds are an easy place to start because most homes already have them, right? They’re great for keeping your home in shade, if you keep them closed, that is which means they can protect your interiors from the biggest harms of UV rays. It’s that simple.

Pro Tip: Invest in blackout curtains for maximum sun protection. Plus, they’re perfect for those weekend sleep-ins. Who said protecting your home couldn’t be comfy?

2. UV-Protective Window Films: The Invisible Shield

Next up, let’s talk about window films. These bad boys are like invisible shields for your windows, blocking out up to 99% of harmful UV rays. It’s like giving your house a superhero cape, minus the tacky spandex. These films not only protect your furniture and floors from fading but also help in keeping your home cooler. Win-win!

Witty Note: It’s like sunscreen for your house—without the greasy residue. Just make sure to apply it more often than you apply sunscreen at the beach.

3. Home Window Replacement: Out With the Old, In With the New

If your windows are older than the internet (yes, those days existed), it’s time to call in the home window replacement pros. Modern windows come with built-in UV protection, better insulation, and they look sleek. Home window replacement might sound like a big deal, but think of it as a facelift for your house. Plus, new windows can save you money on energy bills, so it’s a win for your wallet too.

Fun Fact: Did you know that by replacing old windows, you can reduce your energy bill by up to 15%? That’s more money for ice cream. Or wine. Or whatever makes you happy.

4. Furniture Rearrangement: Sun, Stay Away!

Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best. If you’ve got a favorite piece of furniture that’s constantly bathing in the sunlight, move it to a shadier spot. Rearrange your room to keep sun-sensitive items out of the sun’s direct path. This is also a great excuse to freshen up your living space without spending a dime.

Bonus: Your friends will think you’ve been busy redecorating when really you just moved a chair. It’s all about those easy wins.

5. Reflective Window Shades: High-Tech and Cool

Feeling fancy? Reflective window shades are your new best friend. These shades reflect sunlight away from your home, reducing heat and sun damage. They’re like mirrors for your windows, but less creepy and more functional. Plus, they come in various styles, so you don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics for protection.

Techie Tip: Pair them with smart home systems for automated shade control. Because nothing says “I’ve got my life together” like controlling your blinds with your voice.

6. Outdoor Awnings: Your Home’s Stylish Sun Hat

Outdoor awnings are not just for quaint little cafes. Installing awnings over your windows and patio can significantly reduce sun exposure inside your home. They’re like a stylish sun hat for your house, providing shade and adding a touch of charm. Plus, you get a nice shaded area to chill outside. Summer BBQ, anyone?

Style Hint: Choose retractable awnings for flexibility. You can roll them out when the sun is blazing and tuck them away when you want to enjoy a clear sky.

7. Indoor Plants: Green Shields

Indoor plants are not only great for your Instagram feed but also for protecting your home from sun damage. Strategically place larger plants near windows to act as natural sun blockers. Plus, they improve air quality and add a refreshing vibe to your space.

Green Tip: Opt for sun-loving plants like fiddle leaf figs or rubber plants. They thrive in sunlight and provide excellent coverage.

8. Protective Coatings for Floors and Furniture

If you’re super attached to your hardwood floors or that vintage coffee table, consider applying protective coatings. These coatings can shield your floors and furniture from UV rays, preventing them from fading and cracking over time. It’s like a spa treatment for your home’s surfaces.

DIY Fun: Many protective coatings are easy to apply yourself. Turn it into a weekend project with your family or friends. Just don’t forget the pizza and drinks.

The sun may shine, but that doesn’t have to be bad news for your home!
