Start With a Plan
One of the first things you should be doing is making sure that you are making a plan. Before you dive deep into the decluttering process it is important that you have a clear plan of what you want to accomplish. Start by deciding which areas of your home need the most attention.
Maybe your living room, your kitchen, your bedroom or even your garage. Prioritizing a list of what you need to focus on is going to help you get organized a whole lot quicker. It also helps you to set a time frame for each room or task to keep yourself firmly on track.
Knowing what you want to achieve will give you a sense of direction and motivate you to keep on going.
Gather Your Supplies
Once you have a plan in place, you should gather all the necessary supplies you need for decluttering. This includes trash bags for items you want to throw away, boxes for donations and containers for items you want to keep.
Having the right supplies on hand will make the process more efficient and prevent you from getting sidetracked.
Sort and Categorize
To declutter your home quickly it's important to sort and categorize your belongings as you go. The safest thing to do is to categorize things into three sections. Namely, donate, discard and keep.
As you go through each item ask yourself if it is something you use regularly. If it is not then you should probably consider donating it and if you do keep it you can put it in a storage unit.
You can also ask yourself if something has sentimental value or if it is just taking up space, this will help you to decide which pile it should go into.
You need to be honest with yourself and don't hold on to items out of guilt or obligation. Categorize what you need correctly this way you'll be able to declutter effectively.
Declutter One Room at a Time
The best thing you can do is to try to declutter one room at a time. If you try to do it to your entire home at once it's going to be overwhelming and very counterproductive. Instead, you need to focus on one room at a time.
Start with the room that will give you the biggest sense of accomplishment, this may be the kitchen or bedroom. Once you finish one room then you can move on to the next so quickly.
