There are many benefits to being a homeowner, but when you hold the keys to a property in your hand for the first time, you take on a raft of responsibilities. Often, repair jobs are minor, but sometimes, red flags can appear that need tackling immediately. In this guide, we’ll outline some household issues you should never ignore as a homeowner.

The roof of your home plays a critical role in protecting the building from the elements. If your roof is damaged as a result of extreme weather, or you have an old house and there are signs of significant wear, it’s best not to delay roof repairs. Minor issues can spiral into much larger problems, which are more difficult and expensive to fix. In most cases, experienced roofers can repair damage but in some scenarios, it may be best to replace the roof. If the roof is old, or it has sustained extensive damage, for example, a replacement may be more cost-effective.

Pest infestation

Most homeowners dread hearing scuttling noises from the attic or spotting droppings on the kitchen floor. Sadly, pests are a problem many have to overcome. One of the main reasons why it’s important to tackle pest infestations rapidly is the speed at which issues develop. A small crowd of unwanted visitors can multiply quickly. If you have any concerns about pests in your home, search for pest control experts in your local area. Experienced pest control professionals will be able to explain options to you and share advice to prevent further issues in the future. The most common types of household pests include rats, mice, ants, bed bugs, fleas and flies.

Structural damage

Signs of structural damage can cause severe anxiety for homeowners as well as buyers considering their next move following a home survey. Cracks in the walls, sloping floors and problems with the foundations of the property warrant further investigation. It’s best to get these signs checked out by professionals as soon as possible, as time will only make the situation worse. If you own the house, seek expert advice, explore your options and compare quotes. If you’re interested in buying a house with potential red flags, get some quotes for remedial work before you sign any contracts. You may decide to offer a lower price or ask the vendor to cover the cost of the work if you want to go ahead.

Dampness

Dampness is a side-effect of excess moisture in your home. It can be caused by a damaged or worn roof, old or poor-quality brickwork, poor ventilation, or holes and gaps in the window or door frames. Signs to look out for include a musty smell, mold growth, discolored patches on the walls and ceilings, damaged plaster and rippled paintwork. If you’re worried about dampness in your home, contact a local damp-proofing expert.

There are many benefits to owning a home, but when you become a homeowner, you also take on responsibility for maintenance, upkeep and tending to issues and repairs. Some jobs can be left, but if you spot signs of serious issues, it’s best to act rapidly. Seek expert advice if you’re worried about roof damage, pest infestations, structural damage or dampness.
