When it comes to furnishing the home, the majority of us attempt to save what money we can on the biggest items. You know the ones; anything from a bed frame to a couch can set you back in a significant way if you aren’t careful. For a sofa set, especially, you’re looking at a pretty hefty amount for a good quality option. And, that’s before you even consider the armchairs, and any other additions you want to bring to the table. In no time, your sofa is looking almost as expensive as your house was. Okay, not quite…but, you get the idea. This is by no means a cheap addition.

What’s more, many of us admit to not enjoying sitting on that sofa in the evenings. This is especially the case if you work in an office chair all day. Isn’t it just too much of the same? Heck, if you’re sitting on the sofa, you may as well carry on with work, right? Talk about never giving your back a break.

When these two points work together, they seem to lead to one obvious conclusion – it’s time to look into alternative seating arrangements. That’s right; you need to get creative. This may seem crazy, especially given that many of us equate a good old sofa set with the idea of a cozy home. But, when the old isn’t working for you, it’s unlikely you’ll feel cozy when using it. And, looking into alternatives could help your back and your bank balance. So, what’s to stop you from giving the following options a shot?

Scrap seating altogether

We’ll jump straight in with the most outlandish suggestion of all. You could just… not sit down. Shocking, we know, but when you’ve been sitting all day, this could be the best option. What’s more, it would do away with your need for a sofa altogether. Of course, you’d need some seating arrangement for guests and such. But, you could make use of ottomans here, or just a beautiful set of individual seats. These have the benefit of being easy to move around if you do want to clear the space and stand or stretch instead. We know how crazy the idea of standing in front of your favorite shows sounds. And, you may not want to spend the whole evening on your feet. But, you’d be amazed how much better you’ll feel after trying this out a few times. After all, being on your feet encourages you to move around and get active. And, that’s the best thing for it after a day at your desk.

Divulge in a daybed

You could always put a daybed where your sofa would be. This has the benefit of giving you the option of lying down if you want to stretch out. What’s more, it could be a much cheaper choice. Most daybeds cost less than sofa sets to buy.
They’re also relatively easy to create out of old cribs and such. So, you could well achieve this without spending a penny. This is also a good choice for those having a hard time letting go of the sofa ideal. After all, a daybed doesn’t look all that different to what you’re used to. It’s certainly unlikely your guests will bat an eye. And, still, your back can enjoy a much-needed break with this option. All you would need to do to ensure comfort is invest in some throws, and stock up on a decent amount of cushions. Talk about indulging yourself after a hard day at work!

A bean bag with benefits

Given that you’re trying to get away from that straight backed standard, what could be better than bean bag seating? Options like the giant bean bags by companies such as Sack Daddy could more than accommodate as many people as a sofa promises to. What’s more, you don’t have to worry about being crammed into the same position this way. A bean bag allows you to get right down and spread out. With this option, you have no choice but to stretch those back muscles, and that’s got to be a good thing. And, again, this is sure to cost less than your standard sofa set would. Individual options would certainly be a cheap way of doing things, but even a giant bean bag promises to be cost-efficient. And, this will be a real talking point for anyone who enters your home. And, don’t we all love people to talk about our decor choices?

How about a hammock?

If you want to go all out with mixing up your evening seating, you could always install a hammock or two in your living room. They may seem outlandish, but this can be a lot of fun. And, when it comes to sitting in different ways, it doesn’t get much better than this. What’s more, hammocks provide options. You could sit with your legs dangling, or go ahead and lie straight down. Either way, straight-backed sitting will become a thing of the past with one of these around the place. You may still want to keep some standard chairs aside in case of guests. After all, not everyone will want to hang in your hammock. But, that doesn’t mean this isn’t an option worth pursuing. Even with buying chairs on the side, costs here will pale into insignificance compared with the expense you'd face otherwise.

A final word

As you can see, there are many alternative seating arrangements you could attempt for evening comfort. If you often struggle with back pain after a long day, these could be the answer for you. What’s more, every suggestion mentioned above will save your bank balance. Making changes to things we consider staples in the household can be daunting. But, if you get this right, you may never have to go back to ‘traditional’ seating options. After all, they aren’t serving you right now, and you deserve a home you can feel comfortable in.
