Investing in your first or next property is always an exciting process. However, we all tend to take to it in different ways. While some will want a premade home, others like the idea of taking a fixer-upper and showing it some love. If you are in the latter camp and have just purchased an old property, you may be wondering how exactly you’re meant to tackle it. Here are seven tips to help you get started.

1. Draft a Rough Plan

As you start to think about getting the project underway, you may realize that this can feel like such an overwhelming task to take on! However, that gets a lot easier when you have a plan in place to follow. Make sure that you start by sitting down and thinking through all of the different tasks and work that need to be done. Then, you can create a plan of action, and you have a strategy to follow to get things started.

2. Clean and Clear the Place

When it’s time to get things underway, you will often find that the first place to start is with the clearing aspect. When you pick up a fixer-upper home, you may find that it’s in a less than desirable condition. This means it often needs to get cleared and cleaned up before you can start a thing! In some cases, you may have hoarding or biohazard issues to remedy, meaning you’ll need to call in a specialist such as Scene Clean, Inc. to do this for you. Then, when you know that it’s safe and less of a hazard, you can carry out any general clearing and start to get things cleaned up.

3. Get Quotes from Professionals

During this phase, you will also want to get your quotes in. Some people will want expert contractors to undertake the majority of the work, while others will want to do the bulk of it themselves. Regardless of where you fall here, you are likely to need help with some things. Getting quotes in early means that you can decide which parts you want help with and which you’ll do yourself!

4. Focus on the DIY You Can Do

However, at this point, you may start to realize that renovations can come in quite costly. This is why you may want to think about taking on some of the work yourself. While there will always be elements to a renovation that you aren’t skilled enough to do, or that may not even be all that safe, there are things you can do yourself. There are so many simple home improvement ideas that you can get started with to not only keep the costs down but also feel accomplished with your project!

5. Be Thrifty

The next thing to focus on here is the idea of getting some thrift shopping underway! When it comes to taking on a fixer-upper, you will always know that there is a lot of work for you to do. While this isn’t always a bad thing, it can cost a lot of money if you were to go by traditional construction and renovation standards! This is why it can be a great idea for you to think about investing in thrifted items to finish off your home. From furniture to accessories to reclaimed materials for the renovation, you may find that it can cut your costs dramatically.

6. Take Your Time

It’s also really important to make sure that you can take your time with what you’re doing. Renovations are always going to be a lot of work, and when you purchase a fixer-upper, that can be amplified. But that doesn’t always mean that it needs to be a stressful process. Instead, you can embrace it and look to take your time. There’s a certain level of satisfaction that comes with the idea of transforming your home largely on your own. So, if you need to take your time, it’s okay to work to your own schedule and take the pressure off. It will get there eventually!

7. Invest in Ways That Feel Right to You

Finally, when you start to think about your overall budget allocation, it’s important to ensure that you’re investing in the areas that matter to you. This can work in two ways. Not only is it important to make sure that you allocate the amount of budget you want to the right areas, but you also need to make sure that you’re only spending what you feel comfortable and can afford to spend! So while you will need a qualified electrician to take on any of the skilled work for you, you can take on the painting yourself! Likewise, you may want to invest more in a beautiful kitchen design but then cut back on things like carpets, accessories, and paint, or vice versa!
