There are many different ways to create the perfect family home, from ensuring your personality is reflected in your decor to choosing the perfect color scheme for each room.

Weather-proofing your home is also a great way to achieve this goal, as it ensures that you’re keeping your family safe and protecting your home from long-term, costly damage.

With that in mind, here are some top tips for weather-proofing your home.

Ensure your home is well-insulated

Ensuring that your home is properly insulated will not only prepare you for bouts of bad weather, but it’ll also help you to lower your energy bills. Fortunately, there are many ways in which you can achieve this goal, such as by sealing gaps in windows and door frames and installing insulation in your basement and attic.

If a storm is headed your way today, scroll down and get our “Prepare for Power Outage Checklists” which includes severe thunderstorm, tornado and blizzard tips.

Deal with any roofing issues

A wide variety of adverse weather conditions can damage your home’s roofing, such as high winds and storms. This often means that existing issues, such as missing shingles, can be worsened during even the mildest weather changes. As such, you can protect your home from significant damage by contacting a roofing contractor who can do the necessary repairs. This will provide you with much greater peace of mind moving forward.

Clean your gutters

Cleaning out your gutters can help to weather-proof your home, especially if you’re hoping to avoid potential water damage. This is because clogged gutters can contribute to flooding and blocked pipes within your home. Despite this, a recent study found that 29% of homeowners have never cleaned out their gutters. Moving forward, it is important that you are not part of this statistic! Instead, you should aim to clean out your gutters a few times a year, especially if you’re prepping for an onslaught of bad weather.

Consider replacing your windows

Replacing your windows can also come in handy when it comes to weather-proofing your home. For example, double-glazed windows can help to prevent heat from escaping, whereas stormproof windows can protect them from wind-related damage. While this may come at a significant expense, be mindful of just how much money this can save you in the long run. Not only that, but it will also add significant value to your home should you decide to sell it in the future, meaning that in any case, it is something you’ll get an excellent ROI from!

Secure outdoor furniture

If you’re expecting high winds or storms, make sure that any outdoor furniture is secured. Alternatively, place it into storage when not in use. This can prevent damage to your property caused by flying debris!

Final thoughts

While we cannot control the weather, there are plenty of steps that we can take to protect our home during adverse weather conditions. This can save you a lot of money further down the line, as you’re no longer having to fork out thousands of dollars on costly repairs. It will also provide you with much greater peace of mind as a homeowner!
