Check your roof for signs of damage

Homeowners should regularly inspect their roofs for any signs of damage, especially in the wake of bad weather. Tell-tale signs of potential damage include the build-up of moss, damaged or missing tiles, or cracked gutters. If any of these issues become apparent, you should reach out to a local roofing company to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

  • Seal any gaps in windows and door frames. While certain home repair tasks require the support and assistance of professionals, you’ll find that some things can be carried out independently, saving you a great deal of money in the process. For example, you can quickly and easily seal any gaps in windows, walls and door frames using calk or similar materials.
  • Insulate your home. Ensuring that your home is well-insulated is another great way to take a step in the right direction regarding home maintenance. After all, not only will this help you to keep your home warm no matter how much snow falls outside, but it can also help to reduce your energy bills.

There are many different ways in which you can set about insulating your home, such as by installing double-glazed windows and purchasing draught excluders. Don’t forget to check on (and replenish) any installation within your basement or attic, as these are areas that homeowners forget to check during this stage.

You should also look at the plumbing within your property and whether any problem areas need addressing to avoid potential leaks.

Testing your emergency alarms

Home alarms should be tested on a regular basis. Despite this, studies have found that only 7% of homeowners test their alarms as often as they should. If you haven’t gotten around to doing this for some time, there’s no time like the present. Be sure to check all of your alarms, such as:

  • Smoke alarms
  • Fire alarms
  • Carbon monoxide detectors
  • Security alarms

Don’t forget about your yard

You should also be sure to clean up your yard before Winter kicks off in full force. After all, taking measures to protect your plants and flowers from the cold can ensure that they thrive come spring.

In addition to this, it is also worthwhile to store away any garden furniture during this time. After all, you’re unlikely to use it during this time period, and putting it away somewhere safe can prevent weather-related damage, such as the build-up of mold or mildew on wooden furniture. If you do not have a place to store this within your home, consider investing in a storage unit!

In short, there are many steps that you can take to protect your home this winter.
